What is fatty liver?

As the name suggests, it is the condition when there is fatty deposition in the liver.

It is of two types of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Too much fat in the liver can cause liver inflammation and damage the functioning. If left untreated for a long time, it might also lead to liver failure.

Though it is a serious condition, many people are either unaware of it or else are misinformed about it. In this article we have busted a few common myths around fatty liver disease.

Fatty liver remedies which you need to try now

2/6

Myth: Fatty liver is only caused by alcohol

Any liver problem is directly associated with alcohol without even thinking more about it, let alone going to a doctor.

Fatty liver disease can occur without alcohol consumption.

There are several risk factors, independent of alcohol consumption, which can influence fatty liver disease. Obesity, type 2 diabetes, eating excess calories, having high triglycerides in the body can also trigger fatty liver conditions.

3/6

Myth: Fatty liver is not that common

Another misinformation around fatty liver is that it is not a common reason.

The fact is that the reason why fatty liver is not a common disease is because it is under-reported. Not many people are aware of having fatty liver.

The cases of fatty liver are rising fast in India. As per a health expert, fatty liver is the second most common cause of liver disease that requires liver transplantation.

4/6

Myth: Fatty liver disease only happens to obese people

While obesity is a major risk factor for fatty liver condition, it is not the sole reason. Just like many people associate fatty liver with alcohol, many others think that it only occurs to those who are obese.

The fact is fatty liver occurs in those who are metabolically unhealthy and can also happen to lean patients.

5/6

Myth: There is no treatment for fatty liver

Fatty liver condition can be treated or, better said, can be managed if you make changes to your lifestyle.

Studies have found the direct link between liver health and physical activity. Weight loss is also effective in lowering the risks associated with fatty liver.

6/6

Myth: I am physically active, I won't get fatty liver

Yes, being physically active does help in managing liver fat but medically physical activity means a dedicated exercise routine.

In order to get the benefits of physical activity one should have a routined lifestyle.

Moderate to high intensity aerobic exercise is useful for managing fatty liver.
