Even with mild symptoms, why is monkeypox concerning?

Just recently, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency following a rise in cases. This came at a time when the World Health Organization (WHO) had already announced the disease to be a global health emergency.

The monkeypox virus has currently been detected in over 80 countries, with over 17,000 cases worldwide.

So far some of the most common symptoms identified include fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, headache, muscle and backache and respiratory issues. However, the most telling symptom of the infection is a rash that goes through several stages.

Many have come to the fore to talk about their experience with the infection. Recently, a young social media star Ollie Sinha publicly shared his encounter with the virus.

How does monkeypox generally spread?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), monkeypox can spread to anyone through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact, including:

- Direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox.

- Touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox.

- Contact with respiratory secretions.

Furthermore, the US health agency warns against sexual activities including hugging, kissing, and indulging in sexual intercourse.

What does the young TikTok star reveal

Ollie Sinha, a TikToker, recently shared his experience with the viral infection.

He says that it was during his vacation in Madrid, Spain, where he first caught the virus. Talking about his ordeal on a TikTok video, he says, “I have a weakened immune system due to personal health reasons and I also tend to pick my skin a lot due to anxiety. I didn’t get this through s-e-x.

“I think [I got monkeypox] mainly from going to clubs. There was a lot of close contact happening. I also kissed some people.

“I wanted to share my personal experience and things that have helped me get through it as well, as I found there is still not a lot of information about there,” he adds.

Two symptoms that appear at night; 'worst pain of my life'

Besides sharing how he contracted the virus, the TikToker also described some of his symptoms while also talking about the toll it took on him.

He said, " “My first symptoms were having a very high fever and sweating a lot at night. A couple of days before the first lesions started showing up. We were initially worried it was Covid as my dad had tested positive and I was coughing fairly badly as well.

“But I had taken three Covid tests, one day after the other, and nothing had showed up. But after a couple of days that sort of disappeared and I thought I was fine. Then I noticed small red bumps forming on my skin.

“The bumps started getting bigger and were in quite unfortunate places. I was probably in the worst pain of my life," he shared.

Additionally, he revealed that he could not sleep well because of the pain.

"I would be waking up every hour during the night and it would take me ages to get back to sleep just because I was in so much pain," he said.

How to differentiate between Monkeypox and COVID

According to Sinha, the symptoms he first experienced gave him the impression that it was COVID. However, getting three negative COVID test results back to back confirmed that it was not a SARs-CoV-2 infection.

As the symptoms disappeared, he noticed small red bumps forming on his skin, which kept getting bigger and were in "quite unfortunate places," he says.

“I couldn’t sleep because of the pain. I would be waking up every hour during the night and it would take me ages to get back to sleep just because I was in so much pain," he said.

Ollie further explained, "It was excruciating. I was crying trying to get out of the car, getting in and even sitting in the car. Walking became so painful.”

On treating lesions associated with monkeypox

Having had paracetamol to no effect, the TikToker was then given codeine, which has helped his lesions to scab over.

“I am currently using rose hip oil and tee tree oil to prevent any scarring,”Ollie continued.

“I am also staying out of the sun, like how you would treat any acne scarring. I also do not scratch or pop them," he shares.
