As per GLOBOCAN India statistics 2018 lung cancer accounts for 8.1% of all cancer deaths

Lung cancer is prevalent in the country with 5.9% of all cancer cases; it is the fourth most common form of cancer.

As per the GLOBOCAN India statistics 2018, cited by a research study, lung cancer cases were 67,795 whereas lung cancer mortality was 63,475.

The prevalence of smoking in patients with lung cancer is nearly 80%.

What causes lung cancer?

There are several factors that increase the risk of lung cancer.

Smoking is the largest risk factor for lung cancer and is held accountable for the majority of the lung cancer cases in the world.

Apart from this secondhand smoke, air pollution, and exposure to chemicals like radon, asbestos also cause cancer in lungs.

Occupational exposure to certain substances which are carcinogenic in nature also increase the risk of lung cancer.

Lung cancer is treatable at an early stage, which makes it important to identify the disease.

Here are few unusual symptoms associated with lung cancer:

3/7

Pain in shoulder

People with lung cancer often notice pain or weakness in the shoulder.

The reason behind this shoulder pain, health experts explain, is a tumorous growth. The tumor might exert pressure on the shoulder. The shoulder pain may be due to the pain on any nerve on the shoulder and can also be a sign that the cancer has spread to the shoulder.

4/7

Difficulty swallowing

Difficulty in swallowing called dysphagia is a complication of lung cancer. In this the passage of the food is blocked.

This condition is also a complication in oral cancer, throat cancer, and melanoma.

5/7

Persistent chest pain

"When a lung tumor causes tightness in the chest or presses on nerves, you may feel pain in your chest, especially when breathing deeply, coughing or laughing," John Hopkins medicine report says.

Chest pain is also an indicator of several life threatening diseases like heart attack, which is often misunderstood as gastric or some mild temporary issue.

6/7

Hoarseness of the voice

When the cancer presses on the laryngeal nerve, the individual develops a hoarse voice.

Another reason why lung cancer patients have hoarse voice is because of the chronic cough, a common sign of this cancer, which interferes with the vocal cords.

7/7

Swelling in the face and neck

Swelling in the neck and face can indicate lung cancer. It happens when the cancerous growth in the lungs obstruct the flow of blood into superior vena cava, which is known as superior vena cava syndrome.
