High cholesterol seems to be a permanent state for some; know why

Many people try hard to lower their cholesterol level but everytime they test the level, it comes up. Why is it so?

While genetics can be one reason behind this stubborn cholesterol level, there are several other factors which stealthily favor high cholesterol in the body despite several attempts made to lower it.

Here are the plausible explanations for why high cholesterol does not come down despite trying:

2/6

You have completely stopped having dietary fat

The whole objective behind cholesterol management is to limit LDL and promote HDL. Cutting out every dietary fat is a very common mistake made by those who are diagnosed with cholesterol.

The fact is one should cut off trans fats like the fat present in baked goods. Fats present in olive oil, walnuts, and almonds should be consumed regularly. These are good cholesterol and provide the body with different kinds of nutrients.

3/6

Not taking medicines regularly

People with high cholesterol are prescribed statins. Doctors always recommend you to take statins on a regular basis in order to benefit from its advantages.

The dosage of the medicine also plays an important role in cholesterol management. Hence it is advisable to get your blood checked regularly and consult your doctor regarding the same so that proper dosage of medicines can be given to you.

4/6

Other medicines might be interfering with statins

Medications do interfere with each other and pose a great problem for those who consume different kinds of medicines on a daily basis to counter different ailments.

For example medicines like steroids and retinoids inhibit the function of statins.

Inform your doctor about the other health conditions you have and the medicines you consume for that.

5/6

Having an erratic diet plan

Jumping from one diet plan to another in a few days makes it difficult for the body to stay healthy.

In order to manage cholesterol you need to have a stable diet which should comprise healthy and nutritious food. A diet comprising whole grains, good fat, fish, fruits, nuts and vegetables are sufficient to keep the cholesterol in check.

6/6

You have not stopped smoking and drinking

No you can't conquer high cholesterol and pull it down only through medication, exercise and diet. It is a wholesome approach in which all elements need to be put together in order to keep the target under control.

Smoking and binge drinking contribute to cholesterol level as they alter the way cholesterol is regulated in the body.

Hence, if you are on a mission to cut down cholesterol level you need to stop smoking and drinking completely.
