The year is 2027!

Another instance of a microorganism showing its might is depicted in the new web series Kaala Paani. The thriller series is based in an after-pandemic world, in the year 2027 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the union territory of India. The movie is about the potential spread of a bacterial infection.

"What do we call it?"

In one of the scenes, of web series which is available on Netflix, where Lieutenant Governor Zibran Qadri (Ashutosh Gowariker) asks Dr Shashi Mahajan (Chinmay Mandlekar) about the name of the disease, Dr. Mahajan replies "Sir it looks like a variant of Leptospiral Haemorrhagic fever. So we can call it LHF or LHF 27." In the web series, the origin of the disease was traced back to an outbreak that happened 40 years ago in the islands; so clearly this was a variant of the bacteria.

Dr. Soudamini's hunch

Dr. Soudamini Singh (Mona Singh), a woman of guts and principles, did not ignore the disease and relentlessly dug for facts about it by analyzing the symptoms. She wanted to postpone the vibrant mahotsav, the island was waiting for as she was anxiously anticipating a deadly outbreak of the infection. However, her concerns were ignored as the disease had affected only 11 people so far.

What exactly is LHF?

The disease dubbed LHF 27, signifies a variant of an existing disease, a disease that had happened in the past, or a disease that is already in circulation. We are not sure about the number 27 except when LG Qadri says, "I hate it when disease names have numbers in them." While the disease was found to be a waterborne infection, the Oraka tribe interpreted it as tinnotu (or an understanding of something) just the same way they felt the incoming Tsunami in 2004. LHF begins as a fever. A typical velvety black rash is a typical symptom of the disease. The rashes are seen behind the neck region. Many of those who are infected, as shown in the web series, recover from the disease first and then succumb to it when it happens for the second time.

Hiccups and then death

Dr. Singh notices that when people get the infection for the second time, hiccups are a key symptom. This pattern was seen during the previous outbreak of the disease as well, a fact Dr. Singh confirmed from the family members of the deceased ones who had lost their lives to the infection in the past outbreak. Dr. Singh learned that people who died of the infection, for example, the father of the tribesman, experienced hiccups for several days before death. We also see Muni (the migrant from Odisha) dies after being discharged from the hospital.

Is it a real disease?

The depiction of the outbreak is parallel to the COVID-19 pandemic situation that the country dealt with in 2020. During the initial stage of the outbreak, where Dr. Singh was sure it could have been contained, the number of infected people was not high enough to justify the imposition of lockdown and postponing a big festival. LHF 27, especially the number part signifies, that when an outbreak happens in the same population for the second time it is as infectious and contagious as the previous outbreak. Kaala Paani has no single hero, everyone's a hero in the movie.
