Winter has arrived, keep your heart safe

As winter sets in, the risk of heart attacks tends to increase, posing a seasonal challenge for cardiovascular health. Several factors contribute to this heightened risk during colder months. To mitigate these risks, individuals should prioritize cardiovascular health measures during winter. This includes maintaining regular physical activity, adhering to a heart-healthy diet, staying warm to prevent blood vessel constriction, and getting vaccinated against seasonal infections. Being aware of these seasonal risks and adopting proactive measures can help safeguard heart health during the winter months.

Those with prior heart issues need to be more careful

"As the cold wave escalates, people who already have heart problems should exercise preventive measures in addition to taking care and avoiding seasonal flu and infections. The risk of heart attacks is high in the winter and is more common among the elderly," says Dr. Rishi Bhargava, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai.

Young adults need to be careful too

Dr. Bhargava sheds light on the rising cases of heart attack seen in young adults however, this can also occur in younger individuals these days. "A rapid decrease in the surrounding temperature may result in unexpected heart damage or worsening of symptoms. It may also raise the chance of being admitted to the hospital or perhaps increase the chances of death. As heart attack is one of the biggest causes of death globally, heart patients must safeguard their heart health during the winter season," warns Dr. Bhargava.

"The intensity and frequency of angina attacks increase during cold weather"

Dr. Bhargava explains: In cold weather, the blood vessels contract and get narrow. This increases the impact on the heart by decreasing the blood supply to the body, which raises metabolic stress. Additionally, it could raise blood pressure. These conditions put undue strain on the heart. It is more difficult for your body to maintain a healthy temperature in cold weather because your body loses heat more quickly. The heart has to pump more heated blood, which puts more load on it.

Winter cough might seem mild, but it can be a serious trouble for your heart

The prevalence of viral infections, such as the flu, during winter, adds another layer of risk. Infections can strain the cardiovascular system and increase the likelihood of heart-related complications. “Minor illnesses like cold, sore throat and cough are also common during the winter. Even while they are typically very mild illnesses, they can be quite dangerous for someone whose heart is already under strain from other causes,” explains Dr. Bhargava. “The risk of getting the flu during winter increases because low humidity occurs due to indoor heating and freezing temperatures. People who have cardiac problems are at risk from the flu. Get a flu shot and visit a healthcare professional if you start to develop any flu symptoms,” he recommends.

Pay attention to overheating of the body

During winter season we layer ourselves with warm clothing, especially in places where the temperature falls down to a much colder temperature. "Overheating can result from wearing warm clothing and then exercising. If you have heart disease, overheating might cause your blood vessels to suddenly dilate or widen, which can result in hypotension or low blood pressure. If you notice yourself sweating while outside in the cold, you are overheating. If you have heart disease, this sweating should be taken seriously. Discontinue any activity you are performing and head indoors," says Dr. Bhargava.

Changes in lifestyle pose a challenge to heart health

As per the expert, in extreme cold conditions, people tend to stay indoors which limits physical activity and slows down cardiac circulation. He also talks about the lifestyle changes that accompany the winter season. "Overindulgence in unhealthy food, alcohol, partying, and sleep deprivation during the winter festivities can put a lot of stress on the heart. Also, elevated emotional reactions, if uncontrolled, can lead to cardiac stress," he adds. “Before heading outside, stay away from alcohol. It causes your skin's blood vessels to enlarge, which feels warm to the touch but takes heat away from your vital organs,” he warns.

Do you travel during winter?

"Winter is the best time of year to travel for leisure in India. Even though scenery and a relaxed environment can be beneficial to your health, the major change in daily routine and activities can put a strain on your heart," Dr. Bhargava says. If you are travelling make sure you don't miss out on hydration. “Drink a lot of water. Rapid dehydration caused due to cold weather might strain the metabolic system. Consume light, easily digested meals. Be careful not to overindulge in sweets, salty, and oily foods throughout the holiday season and celebrations,” Dr. Bhargava recommends and also suggests avoiding walking more rapidly or engaging in any strenuous physical activity outside in the cold.
