Lame fever strikes Bihar: What we need to know
What is Lame Fever?
The majority of cases of lame fever have been reported in Patna's Lohanipur, Kadamkuan, Bhootnath Road, and a few other places. It has been observed that 20 to 25 per cent of hospitalized patients who arrive with fever display symptoms typical of this unusual illness. In contrast with typical fevers, which are frequently associated with recognized diseases such as dengue or chikungunya, the results of these tests have been negative. This confuses medical professionals about the true origin of lame fever.
What are the symptoms of Lame Fever?
- High fever: Patients commonly experience a rise in body temperature.
- Leg discomfort: The most distinctive sign of this fever is acute leg pain, which even makes walking hard.
- Swelling: Patients often experience swelling around their ankles and knees.
- Walking difficulty: Many people struggle to walk and frequently limp or require assistance.
viral fever spread
Patients have reported being unable to walk properly for up to 10-15 days, even after the fever subsides, which is quite similar to the prolonged effects seen in chikungunya cases.
What can be the possible causes and spread?
Although the exact cause of Lame Fever still remains unknown. The doctors think that, like the other viral fevers, it might be brought on by mosquito bites. There may be an environmental factor at work because the places most hit by this outbreak correlate with those previously affected by dengue.
How can it be prevented?
As the situation develops, the people residing in these areas need to take precautions to protect themselves and their families from Lame Fever. Here are some basic and effective strategies:
- Drinking enough of water will help people flush out pollutants and preserve good health.
- Use insect repellant and long-sleeved clothing, especially around dawn and dusk, when mosquitos are most active.
- Avoid standing water around the place to prevent mosquito breeding areas.
- For those are having fever or severe leg discomfort, see a doctor right once.
