What is kissing disease?

Mononucleosis, also known as "mono," the "kissing disease," is a typical viral infection that primarily affects adolescents and young adults, especially college students. The Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV, which affects around 95% of people, frequently results in the infection. Not all EBV infections will progress to mono, but some will, particularly in those who were not exposed to the virus as children.

2/6

Is mono communicable?

Yes, the mono viruses are quite contagious. Because they are transferred through saliva, the infection is frequently referred to as the kissing disease. Kissing is not the only way to contract mono, though. Mono can spread through sexual activity, sharing of utensils or drinks, and other means.

3/6

Symptoms of kissing disease

The following are a few of the typical mono symptoms:

Fatigue
Sore throat
Fever with a temperature of at least 100.4
Sweats throughout the day or at night
Nausea
Headaches
Chills and body pain
Coughing
Issues in swallowing food
Poor appetite

4/6

Sore throat is the biggest symptom

Many people who assume they have strep throat when they actually have mono present with a sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. It's advisable to see a doctor to receive the proper diagnosis because symptoms can frequently be confused with those of other contagious disorders.

5/6

Preventative measures

Continue to often wash your hands with soap and warm water. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. This will aid in halting the spread of other, more severe infections like influenza, COVID-19, and others.

6/6

The takeaway

Increasing your hydration intake and getting lots of rest are the two best ways to recover from mono. To stay hydrated, choose water over juice, coffee, and soda whenever you can. To give your body a chance to repair, try to get more sleep at night and take naps when you can. Avoid battling fatigue and ensure you rest properly while taking the anti viral meds prescribed by the doctor.
