The effect of NSAIDs on the kidneys

Painkillers, specifically NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), can cause varying degrees of kidney damage.
As a matter of fact, research indicates that in intensive care units (ICUs), NSAID use can lead to up to 15 percent of cases of renal failure. This can lead to the permanent kidney damage which can then turn into the CKD when used over a long period.

Risk factors of NSAID-induced renal injury

It is clear that the chance and the extent of kidney damage caused by NSAIDs are far greater in some groups, including:
Elderly individuals
Individuals who have kidney disease prior to treatment.
Patients who are dehydrated or low fluid intake.
People taking other nephrotoxic medications.
Individuals who take NSAIDs long term.
The risk of kidney damage is far greater in such instances and even temporary usage can be hazardous.

Alternative safer substances and alternative safer considerations

As a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, mefenamic acid is occasionally thought to carry a relatively less nephrotoxicity risk. Nevertheless, it remains risky and is to be used in the event of the utmost need.
Non-NSAID alternatives such as tramadol could also be a safer choice in the patient who needs pain relief, depending on clinical situation. Alongside long-term usage of any pain medication, it is always prudent to consult a doctor before using it.

Will hydration benefit the kidneys?

It is common knowledge that overconsumption of water is capable of preventing the damages that are caused on the kidneys by drugs. Nonetheless, overhydration fails to avert NSAID-related nephrotoxicity and may actually add an undue burden on the kidneys.
