Health mistakes to avoid during Karwa Chauth fasting

Karwa Chauth, the Hindu festival observed by married women for the longevity and well-being of their husbands, is finally here. On this day, traditionally, women observe fast from dawn to dusk and break the fast after the moonrise. The nirjala fast, which means no food or water, however, should be approached mindfully. If not, it could pose potential health risks. If you are observing the Karwa Chauth vrat, here are some health mistakes you should avoid. Take a look.

2/6

Not eating a nutritious Sargi

The pre-dawn sargi meal is really crucial to sustain your energy levels throughout the day. Many people overlook the importance of having a nutritious pre-meal and end up eating anything that they can get their hands on. These include sweets, which can lead to dramatic spikes and crashes of blood sugar levels.
Instead, try to eat complex carbohydrates such as oats or whole grains. You can pair with fruits, nuts, and yogurt for steady nourishment. Also, avoid having spicy or fried foods the night before, because it can lead to thirst and dizziness during the fast.

3/6

Ignoring hydration

Most women observe the nirjala fast, which means zero fluids. Amidst the dry weather, ignoring hydration does not really align with optimal health. While some people neglect hydration, few tend to overdo it. Not drinking enough water can make you vulnerable to headaches and fatigue, on the vrat day, while drinking too much water the night before will strain the kidneys, and exhaust you.
What to do instead? Keep sipping water, herbal teas, or coconut water up to sargi time. Avoid caffeine-laden drinks like tea or coffee at all costs, as they can lead to acidity and fluid loss.

4/6

Overexertion during the day

Yes, the festivities on the Karwa Chauth are exciting. While socializing and interacting with your family and friends is indeed ideal, avoid managing too many chores.
Instead, engage in light activities such as listening to Karwa Chauth kathas, where you can sit. Ensure to wear comfy and breathable clothes. Save your strength for moon sighting and aarti.

5/6

Breaking the fast in an unhealthy way

One common mistake people make during Karwa Chauth is breaking the fast incorrectly. Wondering what is incorrect? Well, gorging on sweets, fried snacks, and heavy meals upon moonrise. This will leave your digestive system overwhelmed, leading to bloating, nausea, or acid reflux.
First, focus on hydration. Then move to light foods such as fruits or nuts. This will help your gut to balance. Eat simple home-cooked meals that are low in spices.

6/6

Neglecting underlying health issues

While many women may want to take the Karwa Chauth vrat, it may not be suitable for everyone. Especially the nirjala vrat, where one does not consume water, can pose serious health risks. Fasting may not be ideal for pregnant women, diabetics, or those with hypertension, as it can cause health risks like low blood pressure or gestational issues.
Always consult a doctor if you are planning to take the vrat. Ignoring underlying diseases can put you at serious risk. Remember, health comes first.
