How to increase magnesium intake in your body?

Why do we need Magnesium?

Magnesium is an active participant in more than 600 diverse bodily processes. With all of its many, different abilities, it helps maintain the nervous system. It promotes restful sleep, maintains stress levels, keeps worry and anxiety in control and so much more. This essential mineral serves as a one-stop solution for various functions, including energy production, muscle support, cardiovascular health and hormonal balance. In fact, Magnesium also helps in the utilization of vitamin D in the body.
Thus, here we list a few ways to increase Magnesium intake.

2/7

Include greens in your diet

If you want to boost your magnesium levels naturally, without taking any extra additives or supplements, the best way is through a well-balanced diet, abundant in magnesium-rich foods. Dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, nuts and seeds (especially almonds and pumpkin seeds), whole grains and legumes are excellent sources of magnesium. Including these foods in your daily meals are an excellent way to increase your magnesium intake.

3/7

Epsom salt bath

A non-traditional way for your body to absorb more magnesium is through taking a bath. Thas right! Including or adding some epsom salt, also known as Magnesium sulfate, in warm water before taking a shower can help with increasing magnesium levels in the body. Soaking in an Epsom salt bath is also a pleasant way to unwind. This approach is particularly beneficial for individuals with sensitive stomachs who may experience gastrointestinal issues with oral supplements.

4/7

Limit the intake of alcohol and caffeine

Certain substances can interfere with magnesium absorption or increase its excretion. Alcohol and caffeine can lead to the loss of magnesium from the body as phosphoric acid in fizzy drinks may also deplete magnesium.
Thus, instead of relying on alcohol or caffeine options, opt for coconut water, as a flavourful alternative to plain water. It will not only keep you hydrated but also provide your body with magnesium and additional electrolytes.

5/7

Choose alternatives to sugar

Refined sugar not only lacks magnesium but can also diminish existing magnesium stores, as magnesium is an important part of sugar processing in the body. Optimal magnesium levels are better achieved by reducing sugar intake. Regarding chocolates, most milk chocolate bars are not magnesium-friendly; their high sugar content may deplete magnesium. So instead, try replacing it with dark chocolate, which can be considered a rich source of magnesium, unlike their sugary counterparts.

6/7

Supplements

If none of the above ways seem to be working, it might be a good idea to incorporate supplements in your diet. Supplements, in the form of multivitamins or magnesium rich capsules or tonics, are another excellent way to increase your magnesium intake.

7/7

The issues associated with low magnesium

Insufficient magnesium levels can give rise to various health problems. A deficiency in magnesium can lead to muscle cramps and spasms, impairing the regulation of muscle contractions. Additionally, inadequate magnesium levels contribute to fatigue and weakness by hindering the conversion of food into energy, resulting in decreased vitality. Crucial for maintaining a healthy heart rhythm and blood pressure, low magnesium can lead to cardiovascular issues like irregular heartbeats and hypertension. In terms of bone health, magnesium, working with calcium and vitamin D, is vital and its deficiency may compromise bone density, elevating the risk of osteoporosis.
