The looming danger of cancer:

Cancer is a deadly disease that is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. It is a leading cause of death worldwide and can have a devastating impact on both individuals and families. According to 2020 Indian statistics, 27 lakh people were diagnosed with cancer and 8.5 lakh cancer-related deaths.

Here’s what the expert says:

Dr. Ranjan Singh, Department of Oncology, CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi says “Several researches have shown that poor lifestyle habits impact the body cells, making them prone to cancer. Lifestyle modifications like adopting healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and following a sleeping pattern can significantly reduce the risk of developing cancer. One of the most important lifestyle modifications for preventing cancer is quitting tobacco. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, and it is also linked to many other types of cancers, including bladder, kidney, and throat cancer.”

Keep your immunity up:

The exact cause of cancer is not known, but the growth of cancerous cells or tumors happen due to low immunity. Foreign cells invade the body and go undetected when a person’s immunity levels are low. A good immune system requires healthy lifestyle which can significantly reduce chances of cancer.

4/6

Maintain a healthy weight:

Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can lead to a good immune system. Generally, people do not consider obesity as a serious comorbidity, but it can significantly increase the risk factor for many types of cancers like breast, colon, and pancreatic cancer”, he adds.

A healthy diet prevents cancer:

A healthy diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein can help in weight management and cancer prevention. These foods contain nutrients and antioxidants that can protect the body from cancer-causing substances. Reducing alcohol consumption or avoiding it altogether can also help prevent cancer.

Tests and screening routine:

“In addition to these modifications, regular cancer screenings, checkups, getting vaccinated against certain sexually transmitted infections, and regular physical activities are also important for cancer prevention. While these modifications cannot guarantee the prevention of cancer, they can significantly reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer. By adopting these healthy habits, individuals can take control of their health and reduce the risk of cancer,” says Dr Ranjan.
