Signs of sunstroke or heatstroke

When you are affected by extreme heatwave you are likely to experience tiredness, dizziness, headache, feeling sick, excessive sweating, unbearable cramps in arms, legs, stomach, increased rate of heartbeat, high body temperature, and feeling very thirsty.

3/7

Avoid doing these during a severe heatwave

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warns people to stay inside the house during peak hours when the intensity of the sun is high, especially between 12 noon and 3pm. It warns not to do strenuous activity outside during this time. Avoid consuming alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated beverages as it tends to dehydrate the body. It also suggests avoiding high-protein food.

4/7

Do THESE instead when there is a heatwave

Drink sufficient water and drink it even when you are not thirsty. While travelling do not forget to carry water. Try alternative ways of hydration like homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc. Use fans, damp clothing and bath frequently in cold water.

5/7

If you have kids in your house

Take care of kids during heatwave. Make sure they drink sufficient water throughout. Prepare different kinds of sherbets and homemade drinks in order to increase the water intake. Distract them from consuming carbonated drinks. Do not allow them to go outside to play. Do not leave them in parked vehicles. In case your kid shows signs of illness take them to the doctor immediately.

6/7

When you see someone affected by sunstroke

Timely assistance can save the life of someone who has been affected by heatwave. The NDMA recommends lying the person under a shade. Try to bring down the temperature of the body by pouring normal water on the head. Once the person is stable give them ORS or plain drink to rehydrate the body.
7/7

Who is at risk?

People who have changed their place are at a high risk of getting affected by heatwave. "People at risk are those who have come from a cooler to a hot climate. You may have such a person(s) visiting your family during the heat wave season. They should not move about in open field for a period of one week till the body is acclimatized to heat and should drink plenty of water. Acclimatization is achieved by gradual exposure to the hot environment during heat wave," the NDMA recommends.
