HMPV cases rise in India: After infants, 80 year old man tests positive for HMPV, here are his symptoms
Since Monday several cases of the hMPV or the human metapneumovirus have come to the fore. The first case was identified in a hospital at Bengaluru, Karnataka where two infants, 3-month and 8-month old were detected being infected with the virus.
The latest case of hMPV is an 80 year old man from Ahmedabad city of Gujarat.
As of now his condition is stable.
All the other cases of hMPV, including the infants who were detected earlier, are said to be stable.
hMPV mostly affects older adults and infants. In older people the symptoms range from mild to severe and the infected individual usually shows symptoms like cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, and shortness of breath. Fever and fatigue may also occur.
In infants, hMPV commonly causes respiratory symptoms ranging from mild cold-like signs to severe respiratory distress. Typical symptoms include cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, and fever. Infants may also exhibit irritability, poor feeding, and lethargy. Severe cases can lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia, characterized by wheezing, rapid breathing, retractions (chest sinking), and cyanosis (bluish skin). Premature infants, those with underlying health conditions, or weakened immune systems are at higher risk of complications. Symptoms may mimic other viral infections, such as RSV, making diagnosis challenging. Immediate medical care is essential for infants showing signs of respiratory distress or dehydration.

Here's how to stay safe:
To avoid human metapneumovirus, hygiene and prevention should be followed. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds frequently after being in public or touching commonly used surfaces. Avoid close contact with an infected person and avoid going to school or work if you are unwell. Frequently touched objects, such as doorknobs and phones, should be disinfected. Use tissues when coughing or sneezing and dispose of them immediately. Keep infants, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals away from crowded places during peak respiratory virus seasons. Strengthen your immune system with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep. Seek medical advice if symptoms arise.Comments (4)
