HIV-related deaths to reach 2.9M by 2030 reveals study, here's why
After taking office, one of the first actions taken by the Trump administration in accordance with DOGE, was to stop all US foreign assistance, including the $40bn USAID for international projects. This was followed by Britain and Europe putting a stop to their own aid that helped those in need across the globe.
While the repercussions of these withdrawals may not have been understood before, a new study has left everyone surprised with its findings on the same. A study published in the Lancet HIV states that up to 2.9M children and adults could die from HIV-related health issues before 2030 because of the aid cuts from some of the leading countries in the world.
The researchers have warned of a resurgence of the HIV epidemic, which could lead to "devastating consequences" globally, with an estimated 4.4M to10.8M new infections in the next five years, all caused by the cuts.
“Decades of progress to treat and prevent HIV could be unravelled,” said Dr Debra ten Brink of Melbourne's Burnet Institute and co-lead author of the study. Regions such as sub-Saharan Africa where the distribution of condoms and preventive drugs were "at first risk to be discontinued" could face an even greater impact, according to Dr Rowan Martin-Hughes, co-lead author of the study. “This is in addition to disruptions in testing and treatment programmes [which] could cause a surge in new HIV infections, especially in some of the areas where the greatest gains have been made, such as preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and paediatric HIV deaths," he added.
The study used a mathematical model to analyse data from 26 countries and produce its estimates. In a worst-case scenario where the Pepfar support halts, aid reductions increase and mitigation stops, the study estimated 770,000 and 2.9M HIV-related deaths by 2030.
Additionally, the study projects a 24% reduction in global international HIV funding by next year. The decline has already begun with the US, UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands having announced or implemented their decision to decrease the spending on overseas aid. These countries together provide about 90% of the international aid, and their decision to back out from this ought to have serious impacts on global health.

Without USAID, HIV will probably fall to below 50% of current levels. Too many vested interests need HIV to mint money....Read More
