What are heart palpitations?

Any unusual feeling or sensation in the heart triggers anxiety and scare. The growing number of heart problem cases among youngsters mostly is a reason to worry about one of the biggest organs of the body. Sometimes we experience a fluttering sensation in the heart. Let’s understand what it is and why does it happen. “Heart palpitations are sensations of a rapid, fluttering, or pounding heartbeat. While they can be unsettling, they are often harmless and not a cause for major concern. However, in some cases, heart palpitations could indicate an underlying heart condition or other medical issues,” explains Dr. Sameer Gupta, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Group Director - Cardiac Cath Lab, Director Metro Group of Hospitals. The expert explains what heart palpitation could possibly mean.

Physical/ mental exertion

It's common to experience palpitations during or after intense exercise due to increased heart rate, says Dr Gupta. Emotional stress or anxiety can lead to palpitations as a result of the body's "fight or flight" response,” he adds.

3/7

Cardiovascular issues

“Abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, or ventricular tachycardia, can cause palpitations. These may require medical evaluation and treatment. Conditions like mitral valve prolapse can also lead to palpitations,” explains Dr Gupta.

4/7

Structural Heart Abnormalities

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, an inherited condition that can cause thickening of the heart muscle and that can precipitate palpitations, he says. Some structural abnormalities present from birth can affect heart rhythm, he adds. It is essential for parents to understand the signs of these conditions and seek medical help at the earliest.

5/7

Underlying medical conditions

Dr Gupta says thyroid disorder, electrolyte imbalance, anemia can also cause the heart to flutter. “An overactive or underactive thyroid can contribute to heart rhythm disturbances and palpitations. Low potassium, magnesium, or calcium levels can affect the heart's electrical conduction system. Reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood can impact heart function and cause palpitations,” he explains.

6/7

Stimulants and Substances

“Excessive consumption of caffeine or use of nicotine-containing products can trigger palpitations,” says Dr Gupta and adds that alcohol and drug consumption can also trigger this heart condition. “These substances can affect heart rhythm and lead to palpitations,” he says.

7/7

Medications and Supplements

“Some over-the-counter medications and supplements can cause palpitations as a side effect. Sometimes medications used for asthma, high blood pressure, and other conditions may lead to palpitations,” says Dr Gupta. It is advisable to consult a doctor before self-prescribing medications.
