What causes gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is caused by the pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is the second most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria. It causes infection in the genitals, rectum and throat.

What are the first noticeable signs of gonorrhea?

The common signs of gonorrhea are painful sensation during urinating, unexplainable vaginal discharge, unusual discharge and bleeding in between periods in females, yellow or green discharge from penis, swollen and painful testicles. Painful bowel movement is another typical sign of gonorrhea.

What are the unusual signs of this infection?

Unusual signs of gonorrhea are abdominal pain or pelvic pain. An increase in vaginal discharge is also a characteristic of gonorrhea, though it is commonly seen in other types of STIs as well. In case of gonorrhea one can also see bleedings after a vaginal intercourse.

Who is at a higher risk of this STI?

Young people, those younger than 25 years of age, are at a higher risk of developing gonorrhea. Having multiple sex partners also makes one at a risk of developing this infection.

Where else does gonorrhea occur?

Apart from the genital areas, gonorrhea also occurs in the rectum, eyes, throat, and joints. The signs of gonorrhea vary as per the location of the disease. In the eyes, it causes eye pain, sensitivity to light and pus-like discharge; if the joints are infected they get warm, red and swollen. A sore throat is a sign of gonorrhea infection. If the bacteria infects the rectum you can spot red blood on the toilet.
