Gastroenterologist explains the earliest signs of nutrient deficiency

Early signs od nutrient deficiency you should not ignore

Most of us assume nutrient troubles show up as dramatic health scares. . The reality is quieter and far more ordinary: tiny daily choices and modern life add up. It can be as simple as skipping breakfast or eating ultra processed food.

As gastroenterologist Dr. Pal Manickam warns, that slow erosion is what makes deficiencies so easy to miss. Globally, more than two billion people are estimated to lack key vitamins and minerals, and recent analyses show large swathes of the world routinely consume insufficient amounts of calcium, iron and several vitamins.

In this article we talk about the early signs of these nutrient deficiencies that one usually ignores as a background noise.

2/9

Fibre deficiency

3/9

Protein deficiency

You may not see muscle wasting straight away, but persistent tiredness and brain fog can be early signals of sub-optimal protein intake. A review published in Frontiers highlights how low protein can alter brain function and neurotransmitter production. When your diet doesn’t supply enough amino acids, your brain and body can’t build or repair efficiently, leading to fatigue, sluggish thinking and mood dips before muscle loss becomes apparent.

4/9

Calcium deficiency

As per Dr. Manickam, rather than bones, one of the earlier signs of low calcium is tingling or numbness in your fingers, lips or around your mouth, known medically as “paresthesias”. According to the NIH’s Endotext resource, neuromuscular irritability including fingertip/face tingling is a hallmark of hypocalcaemia. That’s because calcium plays a key role in nerve-signal transmission; when levels dip, your nerves get easily overexcited.

5/9

Zinc deficiency

The deficiency of zinc is usually shown to be manifesting in loss of appetite but subtle changes in taste or smell and slower wound healing. A study published in Springer Nature Link backs this argument. They found results which indicated that zinc deficiency may degrade taste-bud function, and another source notes delayed wound healing and reduced taste acuity are documented symptoms. If you’ve noticed wounds taking longer to close, or food tastes “off” or less vibrant, zinc could be behind it.

6/9

Iron deficiency

Before hair loss or dizziness set in, the warning sign often is feeling tired even after a full night’s sleep. The Cleveland Clinic notes one of the key signs of iron deficiency is waking up tired. Low iron reduces oxygen delivery to tissues, which means your body and brain operate on low fuel—hence the lingering tiredness.

7/9

Vitamin C deficiency

Dr Manickam highlights that first sign of a vitamin C deficiency may not be getting more colds, but bleeding gums, dry skin and easy bruising. A study published in Frontiers found low blood vitamin C is associated with increased gum-bleeding on gentle probing. Because vitamin C supports collagen formation and capillary strength, when intake is low your gums or small blood vessels may bleed more easily. Further studies have also shown vitamin C deficiency being associated with dry skin and repair of tissues.

8/9

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Last but not the least, the lack of B12 in human body has been associated with tingling in hands or feet (due to nerve effects), pale skin (from fewer red blood cells), or brain fog. These symptoms often get ignored or dismissed for other less severe illnesses. But it should not be. Vitamin B12 is vital for red-blood-cell production and nerve myelination, shortfalls show up as sensory disturbances and cognitive slowing before full-blown anaemia sets in.
