Understanding body dysmorphism

As a doctor and an obesity specialist, I have witnessed the incredible journey of women's bodies through various life stages, especially during menopause.
Menopause is a natural biological process that typically occurs in women around their late 40s or early 50s. It brings hormonal changes, leading to symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, and changes in body shape. As women age, their bodies naturally go through changes, including during menopause. This phase marks a significant transformation that often comes with challenges, both physical and emotional. However, society often magnifies the negative views linked to these changes.
In a world driven by ever-evolving beauty standards, women often find themselves navigating through societal pressures to conform to unrealistic ideals. As they journey through different life stages, especially menopause, these pressures can become intensified, leading to a complex phenomenon known as body dysmorphia. For post-menopausal women, the challenges of body image and self-acceptance can be quite high, posing emotional and psychological hurdles.

​Societal expectations and the pressure to look "perfect"​

From a young age, women are inundated with societal expectations regarding their appearance. The media, advertisements, and social platforms continually promote a narrow definition of beauty, often characterized by youthfulness, slimness, and flawless features. This unattainable standard can significantly impact women's perceptions of themselves, leading to feelings of inadequacy and self-consciousness.
As women age and transition into menopause, hormonal shifts can contribute to weight gain, changes in skin elasticity, and alterations in body shape. Despite these being normal parts of the aging process, societal norms often fail to acknowledge or celebrate these changes. Instead, women are bombarded on all fronts suggesting that maintaining a youthful appearance is the ultimate goal in life.

​Celebrities and weight gain: A target for unfair criticism​

The double standard faced by female celebrities, especially as they age, is a glaring reflection of the deeply ingrained biases prevalent in our society. While men in the entertainment industry often continue to thrive and land leading roles well into their later years, women encounter a starkly different reality.

The scrutiny faced by women in the public eye, especially post-menopause, is undeniably relentless. Female celebrities are not exempt from the natural ageing process, yet they are disproportionately targeted and judged for any signs of ageing, weight gain, or changes in appearance. This not only diminishes their accomplishments and talents but also perpetuates unrealistic beauty standards for women worldwide.
On the other hand, male celebrities are frequently celebrated and respected for their skills and accomplishments regardless of their age or physical appearance. This glaring discrepancy highlights the deeply entrenched gender bias and ageism prevalent in the society at large.
Age is a natural progression, and with it comes changes in metabolism, muscle mass, and body composition. However, the expectation for celebrities to defy these biological processes fuels unrealistic perceptions and adds to the pressure felt by women in the general population.

​Body dysmorphia and its impact on women post-menopause​

Body dysmorphia is a mental health condition characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with perceived flaws in physical appearance and exacerbated feelings of dissatisfaction with their bodies.
The changes brought about by menopause can trigger distress and a sense of loss, making it challenging to accept and embrace the evolving physical self. Women may internalize societal judgements, leading to heightened self-criticism, low self-esteem, and anxiety.

​Combatting body dysmorphia: Promoting self-acceptance and well-being


It's crucial to foster a culture that celebrates diversity in beauty and encourages self-acceptance at every life stage. Here are some steps individuals and society can take to support women post-menopause:
•Promote Realistic Expectations: Encourage a shift in societal perceptions of beauty by celebrating diverse body shapes and ages in media and advertising.
•Education and Awareness: Educate people about the natural changes that occur during menopause, fostering understanding and empathy.
•Encourage open conversations about body image concerns and provide access to mental health resources and support groups.
•Focus on Health, Not Just Appearance: Instead of obsessing over a certain body shape, prioritize overall health. Engage in activities that promote fitness, strength, and mental well-being rather than just aiming for a particular physique.
•Cultivate Inner Strength: Recognize and celebrate inner qualities, skills, and talents. Engaging in hobbies, learning new skills, and nurturing emotional resilience can build confidence irrespective of physical changes.
•Seek Support and Professional Help: If feelings of depression or body dysmorphia arise, seek support from friends, family, or mental health professionals.
•Media Literacy and Advocacy: Challenge unrealistic beauty standards by advocating for diverse representation in media and promoting inclusivity. Educating oneself and others about the impact of societal pressures on body image is crucial.
