Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the world: WHO

Cases of colon cancer are increasing and currently, it stands at third position worldwide. Every year Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is observed in March to create awareness about the disease and to stress the importance of screening for this cancer. As per the report released by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the burden of colon cancer is increasing in Asia. As per GLOBOCAN data 2020, this is the fourth most common cancer among men in India and this alarming data makes it important to know the initial signs of the disease which might appear subtle but are warning signs and need one to visit a doctor.

2/6

Constant change in bowel movement

A changing bowel movement is not something people consider seriously. This is ignored until it starts affecting daily life. Change in bowel movement too frequently is one of the initial signs of colon cancer. In this, the person experiences diarrhea and/or constipation on a regular basis. A change in the consistency of the stool is a key indicator of the disease.

3/6

Feeling bloated constantly

Regular episodes of bloating, cramps, gas, or abdominal pain should not be taken lightly. Many people try to ease the pain by taking herbal medicines and doing home remedies. The aim should be to treat the pain and know its root cause immediately without giving any scope for the disease to grow.

4/6

Sudden weight loss

Unexplained weight loss is a classic sign of cancer. If you are experiencing all the symptoms mentioned above and have also lost lots of weight recently, you should definitely take the help of a doctor.

5/6

Traces of blood in the stool

Along with the other symptoms if you notice traces of blood in your stool do not delay further and visit a doctor immediately. Many people delay medical assistance in this case because rectal bleeding also happens due to hemorrhoids. However, unlike hemorrhoids, rectal bleeding due to cancer does not ease and it worsens with unbearable abdominal pain.

Risk of colon cancer increases if...

The individual is overweight or obese. In 2012, more than 85,000 colon cancer cases were due to being overweight. Not this just type of cancer, obesity increases the risk of developing seven different types of cancer. Alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking also increases of the risk of colon cancer. Lack of physical activity, an unhealthy diet devoid of seasonal fruits and vegetables, fiber also increase the risk of cancerous growth in the colon or rectum.
