Diabetes occurs in older people

Young onset of life threatening diseases like diabetes and heart attacks is being seen in huge numbers these days. Hence it is one of the biggest myths that diabetes is an age related problem.

Studies have found that improper lifestyle makes young adults, mostly between the age of 20-40, prone to metabolic disorders like diabetes.

If you are young but are seeing symptoms of diabetes, it is prudent to get your blood sugar level checked regularly.

Type 2 diabetes is common and hence is mild

Though the occurrence of type 2 diabetes is commonly seen in people, who lead what seems to be a normal life, that does not make it a mild disease.

Diabetes is a slow killer. When it persists in the body for a longer time, it leads to life altering complications. Hence timely medical intervention is extremely important to have a good control over diabetes.

3/9

Your diet should be completely 'sugar-less' once you are detected with high blood sugar level

Another common myth which actually discourages people from getting tested from diabetes is that once the diagnosis test detects you have high blood sugar level you have to adopt a sugar free and a carbohydrate-free diet.

Lack of carbohydrate, the energy giving foods, makes a person weak.

What people need to understand is that diabetes urges you to be more balanced in your diet. The metabolic disorder wants you to have a decent amount of carbs in your diet but not more than what is necessary.

4/9

Diabetes slows down your life

Many people assume that diabetes kills the spontaneity of life and one needs to slow down once diabetes is detected.

This myth stems from another myth which says diabetes occurs only in older people.

The fact is after you are detected with diabetes you need to make yourself more active physically. Diabetes patients are suggested to engage in activities like brisk walking daily.

5/9

Diabetes weakens your body

Diabetes does not make your body weak but lack of awareness and lack of medical facilities for diabetes will definitely make you weak.

Diabetes is when the blood sugar level is exceptionally high and when left untreated it damages the blood vessels leading to several complications. Hence one should always try to keep it under control.

6/9

Diabetes is only caused due to high sugar intake

While high sugar intake is a reason for the onset of diabetes, there are several other risk factors too.

For example, being overweight puts you at a higher risk for developing this condition. Physical inactivity is also another important reason why diabetes occurs early in some people.

7/9

There is no cure to diabetes

Diabetes can not be cured if one does not put an effort to manage it, otherwise it can be brought under control through healthy lifestyle choices.

Eating healthy food, physical activity of minimum 150 minutes per week and taking medical consultations regularly can help a person lead a normal life.

8/9

If no one in my family has diabetes, it won't happen to me

Though diabetes running in the family would make you more at risk, not having it in the family does not safeguard you.

There are chances diabetes has been undiagnosed in your family.

Lifestyle habits influence diabetic condition to a large extent, hence irrespective of whether someone in your direct/ indirect blood relation has diabetes or not, you should take care of your health and never ignore the signs of diabetes.

9/9
