Though there is no particular cure for diabetes, it can be managed to a large extent

Diabetes is a condition which affects the mechanism that regulates the process of converting food into energy. In this condition the blood sugar level increases in the body, due to insufficient insulin, leading to a number of complications.

The food that we eat is broken down into sugar which is then released into the bloodstream. When the amount of sugar in the bloodstream increases to a certain level, the pancreatic insulin comes into play. Insulin regulates the blood sugar by sending it into the cells for use as energy.

A diabetic person does not make enough insulin that can take the glucose to the cells. As a result of which the sugar level in the blood increases. This gives rise to the condition called diabetes.

There are different types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and gestational diabetes.

Though there is no particular cure for diabetes, it can be managed to a large extent with the use of medicines and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Given below are some of the early signs of diabetes which if spotted and treated immediately can stop the condition from worsening.

2/7

Increase in appetite

Since the body's cells are deprived of glucose, the energy level of the body decreases. This in turn triggers hunger response. So even as the person eats properly, the inability to regulate blood sugar does not meet the cellular energy level of the body.

In simple terms, the body does not get the required energy even after eating and that’s why it signals for more energy and therefore the individual feels hungry.

3/7

Blurry vision

When the blood sugar amount increases crossing the threshold, it affects various bodily functions one of the most prominent one of which is blurry vision. Excessive blood sugar damages the blood vessels in the eyes; this is called retinopathy and if left untreated, this can lead to blindness.

4/7

Abnormal swelling or numbness in hands and feet

Diabetes also affects the blood circulation as a result of which individuals can see swellings or may also get numbing feeling in hands and feet. If the numbness persists for a longer time and does not go away it is always advisable to get blood sugar level checked.

5/7

Dizziness and disorientation

Since the body is unable to utilize the food and glucose entirely it is likely that the individual will have difficulty in concentrating and will always be listless.

This is often confused with mood swings.

6/7

Weight loss

If you are seeing unintentional weight loss, it is always wise to consult a doctor. Weight loss is a very common sign of diabetes. When the body does not get sufficient glucose for energy it tries to compensate its energy demand in other ways which subsequently affects the weight. Your body is unable to utilise the food; so no matter how much you are eating you will not gain weight.

7/7

Delay in wound healing

Another common indicator of diabetes is delay in wound healing. Among many factors that delays healing of wounds in a human body, diabetes is common one. As per a health report,"any people who have diabetes also have problems with immune system activation. The number of immune fighter cells sent to heal wounds, and their ability to take action, is often reduced. If your immune system can’t function properly, wound healing is slower and your risk of infection is higher."
