Dengue surge: What’s causing dengue outbreaks? How to stay safe?
Several factors have contributed to the increase in dengue cases. One primary reason is the favorable conditions for mosquito breeding. Excessive rainfall, coupled with stagnant water in containers, pots, and discarded objects, creates ideal breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the mosquito species that transmit dengue. Additionally, urbanization and deforestation have led to habitat loss for natural mosquito predators, further exacerbating the problem.
To protect oneself from dengue, it is crucial to take preventive measures. One effective strategy is to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. This involves regularly emptying containers, cleaning gutters, and disposing of discarded objects that can hold water. Additionally, using mosquito nets, wearing long sleeves and pants, and applying insect repellent can significantly reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
Moreover, early detection and treatment are essential in combating dengue. If symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and rash develop, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and reduce the severity of the illness.
