3,095 new COVID cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours

COVID cases in the country are rising at a rapid pace. A total of 3,095 cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours, the highest so far this year.

Active COVID caseload in the country stands at 15,208.

Health experts have warned to follow hygiene habits in order to avoid catching the infection.

The new XBB variant, XBB 1.16 is believed to be driving the number of cases in the country.

Two COVID deaths recorded in Delhi on Wednesday; CM to hold review meeting

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal will hold a meeting on Friday to review the situation of COVID in the union territory.

"We reviewed the situation. We have asked hospitals to advise coronavirus tests to those who are symptomatic. People visiting hospitals should wear masks," Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj told the media. Today the health department will update the CM on the situation.

Delhi reported two COVID deaths on Wednesday.

In view of the rising cases of COVID in Delhi, UP is in alert mode. Genome sequencing of all positive samples will be done in the state, the government has said.

How to know if you are COVID positive or not?

Though newer variants of the COVID causing coronavirus have emerged, the symptoms have remained the same. It is to be remembered that since the later part of 2021, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus has been circulating in the environment. The variants that are emerging currently are the sub variants of the Omicron.

The common COVID symptoms that people need to be careful about are fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, body ache, muscle pain, sore throat, runny or congested nose, and chest pain.

COVID symptoms are similar to that of common cold and flu.

Hence, it is advisable to test for COVID once these symptoms are seen.

What should you do when you see COVID-like symptoms?

In view of the spike in COVID cases, it is highly suggested to follow appropriate behaviour to stop the transmission of COVID.

Wear masks if you need to go to public places. Keep a sanitizer with you and use it frequently to avoid catching the virus.

Do not touch your nose, mouth or eyes without cleaning the hands properly.

Stay indoors if you have COVID-like symptoms. Do not step outside unless it is necessary.

Avoid going near older people and kids when you have symptoms as COVID and flu viruses are everywhere.

5/6

Why are COVID cases increasing suddenly?

The COVID cases are rising due to the XBB 1.16 variant which is said to be a highly transmissible variant with a high infectivity rate.

As per experts, this sub variant has mutations on those amino acids which gives it a benefit in escaping immunity given by vaccines and previous infections.

XBB 1.16 is a variant of the recombinant variant XBB, which is the hybrid of two super spreader Omicron BA.2 lineages, BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75.

When should you visit a doctor?

We are not unknown to the severity associated with COVID. In both young and old adults, COVID has an impact on the overall health.

Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday said that ICMR is conducting a study on the rise in cardiac issues after COVID. Rise in heart complications have caught the attention of researchers and several studies have supported the claim.

Hence it is important to visit a doctor if the symptoms persist or makes the patient uncomfortable or is difficult to manage with home care.

Signs like chest pain, shortness of breath, extreme tiredness, muscle pain which persist for a long time should not be ignored.

With sudden rise in COVID cases, should you get an additional COVID vaccine? We answer
