Clinical trials of Covaxin will start today in AIIMS Delhi; here is how you can participate in the human trials

As the novel coronavirus continues to ravage the health of millions of people globally, scientists and medical experts have also upped their efforts to develop a vaccine for the highly infectious contagion. Currently, there are more than 14.5 million positive coronavirus cases around the globe and around 6,06,171 fatalities worldwide.

India's two indigenous vaccine candidates

It should be noted that more than 155 vaccine candidates across the globe have entered various stages of trials and 23 out of these, have begun human trials. India, which is also making great strides in the development of a vaccine for the coronavirus, has two indigenous vaccine candidates in Phase I/II of clinical trials, where they will start dosing participants to check the safety and efficacy of the potential vaccine.

​Human trials of India’s first COVID vaccine to begin today in AIIMS Delhi

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi is all set to begin the Phase I/II clinical trials of India’s very first coronavirus vaccine candidate ‘Covaxin’, today itself. It has been developed by Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech in collaboration Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV). The potential vaccine was given the go-ahead by the Drug Controller General of India to start the dosing of volunteers and conduct Phase I/II of the clinical trials. To conduct the same, 12 medical institutes across the nation were notified, including AIIMS Patna and Delhi.

The clinical trials of the vaccine candidate have already started in Post-Graduate Institute (PGI) of Medical Sciences in Rohtak on July 17, 2020 (Friday) and three participants were dosed with Covaxin. In Phase I of the clinical trials of Covaxin, the vaccine candidate will be given to 375 healthy volunteers, out of which AIIMS Delhi will finalise 100 participants

​Steps to participate in AIIMS clinical trials for Covaxin

If you wish to participate in human trials of Covaxin going on in AIIMS, Keep the following things in mind:

Volunteers should be healthy with no comorbid conditions and without a history of COVID-19.

A volunteer between 18 years and less than 55 years would be eligible to participate in the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Any healthy volunteer willing to participate in the human trial should send an email to Ctaiims.covid19@gmail.com or an SMS to or call on 7428847499.
