Omicron symptoms to watch out for

In India, a total of 4,461 COVID cases due to the Omicron variant have been reported till date. Meanwhile, the overall COVID-19 cases is 1,68,063.

Experts predict that Omicron-linked COVID-19 cases are on the rise and will keep rising till the near future. While on one end of the spectrum we can see the government busy equipping hospitals and medical facilities, on the other end we can see people on the lookout for credible information on what Omicron variant is and how serious it is.

Omicron variant: The super spreader form of coronavirus

Since its first detection in August 2021 in South Africa, Omicron has now spread to 69 countries in the world. With its unusually high number of mutations, the coronavirus has challenged human intelligence on to what extent it can evolve. This high mutation in the virus accounts for easy immune evasion and high transmissibility, scientists say.

Therefore, it is essentially required to remain aware and be prepared with everything in order to fight this virus.

Dealing with this virus for the last two years, we have known that the most effective way to handle it is to practice sanitisation in the best possible way and to detect the symptoms early.

3/5

Typical Omicron symptoms to watch out for

As per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting and diarrhea are the common symptoms for Omicron associated COVID-19 infections. Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness, it has said.

The UK's National Health Service (NHS) says the main symptoms of COVID-19 are high temperature, a new or continuous cough and loss or change to sense of smell or taste.

With this and as per the data available from other official sources, it can be seen that the symptoms developed due to an infection from the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is much similar to the symptoms standardized earlier.

4/5

Omicron symptoms overlap with common cold's

As gathered from credible sources, the many symptoms of infection induced by the Omicron variant of COVID-19 are similar to those of common cold. Runny nose, mild temperature, headache, sore throat symptoms which are usually found in common cold have also been predominantly seen in patients infected with COVID-19-Omicron variant.

5/5

What should be the immediate response?

Once a person gets the Omicron infection symptoms, he or she should go into self-isolation. Quarantine, though sounds harrowing majorly due to the tense environment we are in right now, is one of the most effective ways to cut the chain of transmission of COVID-19. One should also take medical assistance regularly from the onset of the infection till it subsides.
