What is COVID HV.1 variant?

After Eris and Pirola, two new strains of COVID-19 are in circulation. The first one is an Omicron spin-off, known as HV.1. This variant has evolved from EG.5, a member of the XBB lineage. It has become the dominant strain in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As per experts, HV.1 seems to be more transmissible. However, there seems to be no extra cause of worry as the variant hasn’t shown the capability of evading vaccine protection or causing more serious illness.

What is COVID JN.1 variant?

The other new variant, JN.1, is a descendant of Pirola. It has recently been found in 12 countries including the UK, US, Iceland, Portugal and Spain. JN.1 variant has been described as much more immune evasive than its “parents,” reports Express UK. While experts are still learning about JN.1, it seems to carry mutations that might help it avoid detection by the immune system. The US CDC, however, said initial data suggest that updated COVID vaccines will help protect against JN.1.

Signs and symptoms

Since a lot more information is needed to understand these new variants, it is best to not take them for granted, and continue following all the necessary prevention and precaution measures.

It is also important to stay vigilant and observant if you experience any symptoms associated with these COVID variants. These are quite similar to the ones we’ve become familiar with during the pandemic, according to health experts.

Symptoms of HV.1

According to health experts, the common symptoms associated with COVID HV.1 include fever, coughing, tiredness, nasal congestion and runny nose. People may easily confuse these symptoms with flu or allergy. It is best to get tested and if you are COVID positive, stay at home to prevent infecting others.

5/6

Symptoms of JN.1

According to health experts, symptoms of JN.1 include the ones mentioned above for HV.1. In addition, JN.1 can cause diarrhea and headaches.

Are there any unique symptoms of these new variants?

Apart from the above-mentioned symptoms, so far, there is no evidence yet of new or unique symptoms linked to these variants, according to health experts. However, it is important to know that there is still much unknown about these COVID strains. That being said, it is important for everyone, especially people at higher risk, to be aware of warning signs and consult their doctor for appropriate treatment.
