COVID vaccinated individuals show this common symptom during infection

For those who had COVID after being vaccinated, the common symptom was related to gut health, a new study has found, putting lots of questions on the course of action of the virus on vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals and also forcing us to refresh our knowledge around the common symptoms of the infection.

What is the common symptom seen in people getting infected post vaccination?

As per the data gathered by the ZOE Health Study App, people who are getting infected after COVID vaccination are showing diarrhea more commonly than others.

The data showed that during the beginning of this year this was one of the most reported symptoms in breakthrough infections related to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

COVID diarrhea lasts for 2-3 days

The study says that diarrhea can be an early symptom of the infection and can usually last for 2-3 days. In some adults it can also linger up to the 7th day.

A good information is that the study found that the prevalence of this symptom has reduced with each variant. Only one in five experience this symptom during the Omicron wave, the study says.

What are the other gut related symptoms associated with COVID?

According to the app, loss of appetite is another symptom seen during COVID. Losing your appetite is an early sign of COVID but it usually comes back after a few days, the researchers have said.

"Early in the pandemic, loss of appetite was reported by around three in ten adults with COVID, rising to roughly four in ten people over 65. That’s now fallen slightly with subsequent variants and vaccination, with just over a quarter of people (25-27%) reporting skipping meals with Delta or Omicron after three doses of the vaccine," the report adds.

What are the common symptoms seen in COVID vaccinated individuals?

As per a recent report released by the ZOE health study app, runny nose, headache, sneezing, sore throat and persistent cough are currently the common symptoms seen in individuals who have taken 2 doses of the vaccine.

"Curiously, we noticed that people who had been vaccinated and then tested positive for COVID-19 were more likely to report sneezing as a symptom compared with those without a jab," the report says and warns that if vaccinated individuals experience unexplained sneezing it is better to get tested for COVID.

How COVID affect the gut system in the long run?

In the long run, COVID affects the gut system in several debilitating ways. Loss of appetite, nausea, acid reflux, diarrhea, abdominal distension, belching, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloody stools are seen among COVID long-haulers.

In a study of 117 participants, loss of appetite was reported to be one of the most common signs of long COVID followed by acid reflux and diarrhea. These symptoms were reported 3 months after the COVID infection.

Apart from these symptoms, people with severe COVID-19 can develop gastrointestinal complications, such as acute cholecystitis, acute pancreatitis, ileus and feeding tolerance, acute colonic pseudo-obstruction, and mesenteric ischemia.

7/8

The risk of long COVID is less in Omicron variant

While the discussion around long COVID is still dicey, ZOE health study experts have found that the the odds of experiencing Long COVID were between 20-50% less during the Omicron period versus the Delta period, depending on age and time since vaccination.

In a study of 56,003 adults the researchers found that long COVID cases associated with Omicron was 4.4% and those associated with Delta was 10.8%. The association of long COVID with the infection period was assessed on the basis of sex, vaccination doses, age, co-morbidities and body mass index

Other points to take note of

Apart from this sign, one should also be careful about other common signs of COVID.

If you are unsure about the cause of the symptom, do not wait for it to go away on its own. Consult a doctor and take medical assistance as quickly as possible so that the issue does not take a toll on your physical and mental health.

In order to keep the gut system clean and active, eat foods that suits you. Do not overfeed your body with processed food and make it a breeding ground for microbes.
