Coronavirus: Is this COVID surge a warning for a massive wave?

Big cities are reporting surge in COVID cases

Big cities in the country are reporting a massive surge in COVID cases. While we have already seen such spikes in the past, it is too early to assume that this surge is just like those in the past. What if it is like the calmness before a storm or the spells of silence before something massive happens?

What the current COVID situation in the country reveals is that the season has no impact on the growth and spread of the virus. Every respiratory illness is not linked to the winter season.

2/6

What is the COVID situation right now?

As per the data released by the Health Ministry on June 8, a total of 5,233 new COVID cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours. India's active caseload currently stands at 28,857.

In the last 24 hours COVID cases have jumped by 41%.

Majority of the cases have been reported from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai areas. Maharashtra alone had 676 cases of COVID in the beginning of this week.

Kerala is also reporting a heavy surge in COVID cases with more than 2,271 cases on Tuesday.

450 cases were reported from Delhi.

3/6

Why are COVID cases increasing in the summer season?

This is because the coronavirus' growth and spread is independent of the season. The virus can thrive in the summer season like it survives in the winter.

Despite it being a respiratory tract infection, which is the reason why people assume it to be a winter-specific disease, COVID can occur in summer seasons too.

Whenever there is a conducive situation for transmission, a healthy individual can contract the virus from an infected individual.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) had earlier warned against letting guards down during the summer season. Many health agencies and government bodies have urged people to keep following hygienic practices even when the number of cases are down.

4/6

What are the symptoms of COVID we should be careful about

If signs like sneezing, coughing, high fever, tiredness, headache, vomiting, nausea and body pain continues for 2-3 days without any other health complication, it is advisable to get tested.

If you test positive for coronavirus, make sure to inform everyone who came in contact with you to remain isolated till the incubation period of the virus.

To avoid contracting the infection follow COVID safety rules.

5/6

Other symptoms of COVID

There are several symptoms associated with COVID other than the ones mentioned above.

Symptoms like loss of appetite, loss of concentration, irritability, sleep disorder, pain in the chest, rashes on skin, extreme pain in the legs and hands are also seen during COVID.

If these unexplainable symptoms persist for a longer duration it is advisable to consult a doctor without any delay.

6/6

We should learn from the past

Just before the dreadful second wave of COVID swept the entire country, there were very few cases in the country. While the new variant was definitely the biggest reason behind the biggest COVID spike, the reason why we should remember it is because it did not come with a warning.

COVID cases spread through human interactions, especially through those who do not wear masks.

All the massive waves of COVID seen across the world, started after a spell of fewer cases.

Therefore, it is essential to follow every COVID safety protocol.
