The role of vaccination amid new emerging variants

At a time when new variants continue to emerge and wreak havoc, the demand for vaccine boosters has increased around the world. The much talked about Omicron variant, now discovered in 63 countries, is said to be highly transmissible.

Recently, the UK became the first ever country to report the death of a patient infected with the Omicron variant, raising global concerns. The government in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus has initiated a nationwide booster programme for people aged 18 and above.

In addition, it has introduced some changes to the vaccine administration process to hasten the process and get as many people vaccinated as possible.

Why are people asked to wait after receiving their COVID vaccines?

Those who have received their COVID-19 shot will be aware of the 15 to 30 minutes observation period post vaccination.

While you may have received your doses of COVID vaccine with no significant reactions or ill-effects, medical professionals recommend waiting at the vaccination center for at least 15 minutes after getting vaccinated. This is to ensure the safety of people who may develop adverse reactions from the coronavirus vaccine. The waiting period allows the medical team to observe vaccinated individuals and treat them immediately, in case of any complications.

UK government says 'no need'

Following the announcement of the first Omicron death in the UK, the government has made it an agenda to get as many people vaccinated as possible. Additionally, officials have urged people to get their booster shots immediately.

That said, in order to speed up the process of vaccine administering, the government has officially waived off the 15 minute wait period post vaccination.

In a press release, government officials said, “The 15-minute observation period after vaccination will remain in place for the small number of people who may have previously suffered anaphylaxis or other allergic reactions to a food, insect sting and most medicines or vaccines.”

This suggests that the 15-minute observation period after vaccination will only apply to people who are at risk of developing severe reactions.

Mass vaccination amid COVID's Omicron outbreak is key

There is no denying that COVID-19 vaccines are a silver bullet, especially when emerging variants have added to our woes.

While vaccines do not prevent us from contracting the virus, it sure does avoid severe illnesses from the infection, minimizing the risk of hospitalization and death. As far as SARs-COV-2 virus is concerned, it is highly unpredictable. Any lax in precautions, vaccine hesitancy can cost us more than we can imagine.

Well the waiting can be done outside the vaccination centre to speed up the vaccines.
