Cancer symptoms you should not ignore

For many women, cancer feels like a distant concern, something to think about only later in life. But the numbers tell a different story. Every year in the United States, more than 375,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), and another 106,000 face gynecologic cancers such as ovarian, endometrial, or cervical cancer. While the majority of these cases are found after menopause, younger women are not immune.

The challenge is that only breast cancer and cervical cancer have routine screening tools. For most other gynecologic cancers, the first clue is a symptom, and those symptoms are often vague, easily mistaken for stress, diet changes, or common conditions. That’s why listening to your body and acting on unusual changes can be lifesaving.

Here are some surprising warning signs that shouldn’t be ignored.

Persistent bloating & early fullness

Feeling bloated every day for weeks, especially if that fullness hits after a small meal, can raise concern. In ovarian cancer, this is often caused by ascites, a buildup of fluid in the abdomen that pushes on the stomach and other organs. One study found that women with ovarian cancer are 3.6 times more likely to experience persistent bloating than those without it.

Unexplained weight loss or chronic Fatigue

When your energy drains despite rest, or weight drops without effort, that's a red flag. These symptoms can stem from cancers like leukemia, colon, pancreatic, or ovarian, often before more obvious signs show up.

Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Abnormal vaginal bleeding is one of the clearest warning signs women should never ignore. In fact, more than 90% of women diagnosed with postmenopausal endometrial cancer report irregular bleeding, and it is also among the most common symptoms of cervical cancer. Changes in breasts

Changes in your breasts can sometimes be the first sign of cancer, and many women notice them on their own during everyday routines like bathing, shaving, or even scratching. Staying alert to these changes is key. Pay attention to any lumps in your breast or armpit, unexpected discharge, alterations in breast size or skin texture, and changes in the nipple, such as retraction or scaling.

6/10

Changes in the skin

Look out for a pearly spot that won’t heal, patches of firm or scar-like skin, or texture changes that feel like orange peel (known as peau d’orange). These could be signs of skin cancers, like melanoma or basal cell carcinoma, or even inflammatory breast cancer.

7/10

Pain in the pelvis or abdomen

Abdominal discomfort, whether it’s gas, bloating, cramps, or a sense of pressure, is often linked to digestive problems or hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle. But when this pain lingers for more than two weeks, it may point to something more serious, including ovarian or endometrial cancer.

8/10

Changes in bowel habits

A sudden shift in your usual bowel pattern, whether it’s new-onset constipation, diarrhea, or noticeable changes in the size or shape of your stool, shouldn’t be ignored. Sometimes these changes can happen when a tumor presses on the colon, altering how waste moves through the body.
