Brain tumour: 6 early symptoms that are often missed and no it is not always headache

When we say brain tumors, we always think of headaches as the primary symptom. However, while headaches are the most common symptom of brain tumors, patients often experience hidden warning signs that even doctors might overlook. The identification of these understated symptoms, leads to earlier medical detection and treatment of brain tumors. Here are 6 early brain tumor indicators which people commonly overlook, but they indicate potential health issues....

2/7

Vision problems

A brain tumor often produces vision problems as its first noticeable symptom. These might include blurred vision, double vision and reduced peripheral vision. This occurs because the brain's ability to process visual information becomes distorted, when tumors apply pressure to optic nerves and areas that control sight. The initial symptoms of vision problems tend to develop gradually through minor vision blurriness and focus difficulties, which people commonly attribute to eye fatigue. Medical evaluation becomes necessary when vision problems persist or worsen, because they might indicate other neurological issues.

3/7

Seizures without previous history

Brain tumors produce seizures as their initial symptom, which affects approximately 80% of patients. This occurs because the brain's normal electrical signals become disrupted, when abnormal brain cells appear. The brain experiences abnormal electrical activity which results in seizures that cause patients to experience twitching limbs, jerking movements, numbness, unusual sensations and loss of consciousness. People who have never had seizures, need to visit their doctor right away after their first seizure occurs. The presence of seizures indicates a brain function problem which requires immediate medical attention, because they represent a direct sign of abnormal brain activity.

4/7

Nausea and vomiting that is persistent

The first indication of a brain tumor in some patients appears as unexplained nausea, and vomiting. The growing tumor inside the skull creates elevated pressure that activates vomiting reflexes through its contact with specific brain areas. The symptom of nausea and vomiting tends to appear with other symptoms like headaches and vision problems, but it can sometimes occur independently too. Medical professionals should evaluate patients who experience unexplained nausea or vomiting, because these symptoms become more severe, when they appear with additional neurological symptoms.

5/7

Changes in personality or behavior

The brain areas which control emotions, behavior and personality show signs of disruption through small changes that family members and friends detect before the person becomes aware of them. The symptoms of brain tumors include growing irritability, memory loss, confusion, mood swings and social withdrawal. Medical evaluation becomes necessary when someone experiences an unexpected change in their personality, because these symptoms can mimic depression, stress or aging. The disruption of brain regions including the frontal and temporal lobes produces these symptoms, which indicate an underlying brain condition.

6/7

Difficulty with speech

Brain tumors that develop in speech areas of the brain, result in speech issues, which include incoherent speech, word retrieval difficulties, and poor comprehension of spoken language. The initial signs of this condition develop slowly through speech difficulties that begin with slurred words, and interrupted conversations. The brain areas responsible for language processing such as Wernicke's and Broca's areas become affected by tumors, which results in speech changes. Medical evaluation becomes essential for communication problems that develop new symptoms, or show worsening signs.

7/7

Weakness, numbness, or coordination problems

The first warning sign of a brain tumor often presents as weakness or numbness in one body side, difficulties with moving arms/legs, and problems with balance and coordination. This occurs because the motor and sensory regions of the brain experience problems when tumors apply pressure to these areas. People who experience clumsiness together with repeated tripping incidents and dropped objects, should seek medical attention. The initial signs of nerve signal disruption become more noticeable through time, and require immediate medical assessment.
