The role of good nutrition for kid’s mental growth

In today’s fast-paced world, children are constantly learning, absorbing information, and engaging in activities that require sharp focus and strong memory. And with all these activities, healthy nutrition goes for a toss.
Whether it’s excelling in academics or mastering a new skill the brain needs the right fuel to function at its best. While genetics and lifestyle play a role in brain development, nutrition is the foundation for cognitive growth.

Fast life has changed the perception around diet

Due to the fast life and less focus on health, children are more drawn towards junk food and mostly foods that are easily available and mimic good taste. Junk food, excessive screen time, and a lack of balanced meals can affect kids’ memory, concentration, and overall brain development. Fortunately, incorporating brain-boosting superfoods into their daily meals can make a world of difference.

3/10

Almonds

When the discussion is about superfoods, who can ever forget the age old memory booster almonds? Indian households have long relied on almonds for boosting brain power. Rich in vitamin E, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids, almonds improve memory, cognitive function, and overall brain health. They also contain riboflavin and L-carnitine, which help in the growth of brain cells and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disorders.
Soak 4-5 almonds overnight, peel them in the morning, and give them to your child on an empty stomach. Else, you can add finely chopped almonds to a glass of milk.

4/10

Walnuts

There is probably no other food as important for the brain as walnuts. Walnuts look like tiny brains for a reason! Packed with DHA (a type of omega-3 fatty acid), they are excellent for boosting cognitive function and reducing stress. They also contain polyphenols, which help improve communication between brain cells, enhance learning ability, and prevent cognitive decline.
To help kids eat walnuts easily, give 1-2 soaked walnuts everyday. You can also crush and sprinkle them on smoothies or yogurt.

5/10

Desi ghee

Desi ghee is considered to be an elixir for brain development. It has been a staple in Indian kitchens for centuries. It is rich in healthy fats, which help in brain cell formation and function. Ghee also contains essential fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) that aid in memory retention and learning. Ayurveda recommends ghee for increasing intelligence and strengthening mental faculties.
Add a teaspoon of ghee to warm milk for a comforting bedtime drink. Drizzle over hot dal, rice, or rotis for added flavor and nutrition.

6/10

Turmeric

Not many people know this, but turmeric is extremely good and healthy for the brain. Turmeric is a miracle spice loaded with curcumin, a powerful compound known to boost brain function and protect against memory loss. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help in cognitive development, prevent oxidative damage, and improve mood by increasing serotonin and dopamine levels.
Mix a pinch of turmeric in warm milk (Haldi Doodh) before bedtime. Use fresh turmeric root to make a healthy turmeric-ginger tea.

7/10

Berries

Introduce your child to organic and seasonal berries. These are packed with flavonoids, antioxidants, and vitamin C that enhance memory and learning ability. They also protect brain cells from damage and improve communication between neurons. Berries are naturally sweet and make for a delicious, healthy snack for kids.
Encourage them to eat berries as they are. For a change you can blend the berries into smoothies or add them to yogurt.

8/10

Millets

The forgotten heroes of Indian food, millets like jowar, bajra, ragi have enough nutrients to boost a child's brain development. These ancient grains are packed with iron, B vitamins, and essential minerals that improve memory, brain function.
Make ragi porridge with milk and jaggery for breakfast. Prepare millet-based dosas, rotis, or idlis for a healthy meal.

9/10

Chocolate

Yes! Chocolates are good for the brain, but only if they are of the right quality. Dark chocolate (with at least 70% cocoa) contains flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants that boost brain function and memory. It also increases blood flow to the brain, enhancing alertness and concentration. However, it’s important to give dark chocolate in moderation and avoid milk chocolates that are high in sugar.
Melt dark chocolate and drizzle over fruits like bananas and apples. Mix dark chocolate chunks in homemade granola or nut bars.

10/10

Foods that hamper brain development in kids

Certain foods can negatively impact brain growth and cognitive function, especially in children. Sugary foods like candies and sodas cause energy crashes and impair memory. Processed and fast foods high in trans fats can slow brain function. Artificial sweeteners in diet sodas may affect neurotransmitters, leading to cognitive decline. Refined carbs like white bread and pastries cause blood sugar spikes, reducing focus. High-sodium snacks like chips can increase blood pressure, reducing brain oxygen levels. Excess caffeine in energy drinks disrupts sleep, affecting brain development. Avoiding these foods and opting for a nutrient-rich diet supports brain health and cognitive growth.
