Ayurvedic remedies for Obesity: A natural and holistic approach
Obesity has become a common concern in today’s fast-paced world. While modern medicine provides quick fixes, Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of life, offers a deeper, long-lasting solution.
In Ayurvedic terms, obesity is known as Sthaulya, and it is considered to be more than just extra weight! It is the result of imbalances within the body and mind, and there are different ways to treat the root cause.
In Ayurveda, obesity is described as an excess of Meda dhatu (fat tissue) and Kapha dosha in the body. This leads to heaviness, lethargy, and poor digestion. It is not merely a physical issue, but also a sign that the Agni (digestive fire) is weak and Ama (toxic waste) is accumulating. When this happens, the body’s natural ability to burn fat slows down, and one gains unnecessary weight.
Obesity is not only about appearance, but is linked to other health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, joint pain, and hormonal imbalances.
Ayurveda identifies several reasons behind obesity, and the simplest ones that everyone knows are - Eating too much heavy food, oily foods, excess sweets, and more.
Plus, when coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, and staying awake late at night, all contribute to weight gain.
Sometimes, even a family history of obesity or slow metabolism can also lead to obesity.
Modern medicine, or allopathy, usually treats obesity through calorie counting, pills, or surgery. And while these methods can give fast results, they often don’t treat the root cause, and many slimming pills have side effects like mood swings, hormonal problems, or digestive issues. Even surgeries like liposuction or bariatric surgery can help reduce fat quickly, but they come with risks and don’t always guarantee permanent results.
Most importantly, allopathy doesn’t always address the imbalance of doshas, the weak Agni, or the emotional and lifestyle reasons behind weight gain. This is where Ayurveda offers a more complete and sustainable approach.
Ayurveda doesn’t focus on weight loss alone, but tries to restore balance, remove toxins, and improve overall well-being in the body.
And so, Ayurveda advocates for treatments like ‘Apatarpana chikitsa’, which is a therapy that involves reducing excess nourishment through light food, fasting, or smaller portions. There is also Langhana, another form of fasting or eating easily digestible food to feel light and energised.
Ayurveda also recommends Panchakarma treatment which gives the body a detox through Vamana (therapeutic vomiting) and Lekhana basti (fat-reducing enema) to cleanse the body and mind.
According to the book titled ‘Holistic Health: Law and Facts’ by Swami Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, certain herbs and spices like Triphala, Guggulu, Chitraka, Vacha, Haridra, and more also help in treating obesity, as these cleanse the digestive system, improve metabolism, activate the body’s functions, and much more.
The book also recommends drinking warm water with Trikatu (dry ginger, black pepper, long pepper) to help in digestion and burn toxins.
Anyone who wants a natural, side-effect-free, and long-term solution to the body’s issues can opt for Ayurveda, under the guidance of an expert.
In cases of obesity management, it is helpful for people who have tried modern treatments but regained weight, those who have a family history of obesity or slow metabolism, and even those who have digestion problems or low energy levels.
