9 symptoms of cancer no one expects
Cough and hoarseness
A lingering cough or changes in your voice might be easy to dismiss as a sign of a cold or allergies. However, if these symptoms persist for more than a few weeks, they could indicate something more serious, such as lung or throat cancer. According to a study published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, a persistent cough, particularly in smokers, should be thoroughly evaluated to rule out lung cancer.
Feeling difficulty in swallowing
Difficulty swallowing, known as dysphagia, is another symptom that can be overlooked, especially if it's mild or only occasional. However, persistent issues with swallowing could point to cancers of the esophagus, throat, or stomach. A study published in The Lancet highlights the importance of early endoscopic evaluation for individuals experiencing unexplained dysphagia, as it may lead to early detection of esophageal cancer.
Sweats at night
Night sweats are often associated with menopause or infections, but they can also be a sign of certain cancers, including lymphoma and leukemia. According to research published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, night sweats, particularly when accompanied by unexplained weight loss or fever, should prompt further investigation for possible malignancies .
Always feeling a heartburn
Heartburn or acid reflux is commonly associated with diet or lifestyle, but if it becomes persistent, it could be a sign of stomach or esophageal cancer. Chronic heartburn that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter medications should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. A study in Gastroenterology found a correlation between persistent heartburn and an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer .
Bumps under the skin
While most lumps under the skin are benign, such as cysts or lipomas, a firm, painless lump that appears suddenly and grows over time could be a sign of cancer, such as sarcoma. The American Cancer Society emphasizes the importance of having any new or changing lumps checked by a doctor, as early detection of soft tissue sarcomas can improve outcomes.
A new pain that doesn't go away
New or persistent pain that doesn’t have an obvious cause can be an early sign of cancer. This is especially true if the pain is localized to a specific area and doesn’t improve with standard pain relief measures. For example, bone pain may be an early indicator of bone cancer. Research from the British Medical Journal suggests that unexplained, persistent pain warrants further investigation to rule out malignancies.
Mouth sores that don't heal
Mouth sores are common and often harmless, but a sore that doesn’t heal after a couple of weeks could be a sign of oral cancer. This is particularly true for sores that are accompanied by unexplained bleeding or a persistent white or red patch in the mouth. A study in the Journal of the American Dental Association stresses the need for prompt evaluation of non-healing oral lesions to detect oral cancer at an early stage.
Persistent itchiness
While itching is usually related to allergies or skin conditions, persistent, unexplained itchiness can sometimes be an early sign of cancers such as lymphoma. The American Academy of Dermatology highlights that when itching is generalized and not related to a rash, it can sometimes signal an internal malignancy.
Ear pain without an infection
Ear pain that isn’t caused by an infection or injury could be a sign of throat cancer, particularly if it’s accompanied by a lump in the neck or difficulty swallowing. According to a study in Head & Neck Oncology, referred pain in the ear is often an early symptom of cancers in the throat and should be evaluated promptly .
