Vision- friendly habits that can help

In an age dominated by screen time, eye fatigue has become a silent epidemic. From waking up to winding down, our eyes work harder than ever before. With the average person spending over 7 hours a day staring at screens, digital eye strain has become a common but often overlooked issue. Long hours on digital devices coupled with environmental pollutants and lack of adequate rest take a toll on your vision over time. Maintaining eye health isn’t just about visiting the optometrist once a year; it's about weaving mindful habits into your daily routine to strengthen and preserve your eyesight. Here are 8 simple yet effective practices to nourish and protect your eyes at home.

2/10

Refresh your eyes with a daily eye care routine

Make it a part of your ‘dinacharya’ to start and end your day by splashing cold water on your closed eyes. This simple ritual not only stimulates blood circulation but also helps reduce puffiness and refreshes tired eyes. For added relief, soak cotton pads in pure rose water and place them over your eyes for a few minutes. Naturally cooling and cleansing, rose water soothes irritation and rejuvenates the delicate skin around the eyes.

3/10

Eat your way to a better vision

According to Dr. Suja Isaac, co-founder, executive director at Soukya International Holistic Health Centre, “A nutrient-rich diet is one of the strongest defenses against vision decline. Focus on foods packed with vitamin A, like carrots, spinach, and sweet potatoes, and load up on antioxidants found in amla, leafy greens, and turmeric. Omega-3 sources like flaxseeds and walnuts are excellent for maintaining eye moisture, while a small spoonful of pure cow ghee, nourishes ocular tissues from within. Aim for a colorful and balanced plate of fruits like mango, papaya, and guava, and vegetables such as butternut squash, broccoli, and kale to cover all your bases.”

4/10

Turn to herbal allies

Nature offers powerful support for eye health. Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry) is rich in vitamin C and known for its rejuvenating properties. Herbs like Brahmi and Bhringraj are well-regarded for supporting cognitive and visual functions. Triphala, a blend of three fruits, is known for detoxification and eye vitality. A mild Triphala drink made with warm water or honey is a simple way to incorporate it into your daily routine.

5/10

Practice simple eye exercises

Strengthen and relax your eye muscles with a few daily exercises. Begin with rubbing your palms together and gently cupping them over closed eyes without pressure. Simple movements like looking up and down, side to side, and rotating the eyes clockwise and counterclockwise help maintain flexibility. Practicing Trataka, or steady gazing at a candle flame, is a traditional technique that improves concentration and visual endurance.

6/10

Follow screen time hygiene

In our digital-first world, screens are inevitable, but their impact on our eyes can be managed. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Adjust screen brightness, use blue light filter settings on your devices, and position your devices at eye level. Apps like ‘Screen time’ (iOS) and ‘Digital wellbeing’ (Android) can help you monitor and limit your screen time.

7/10

Try yoga for vision

Mindful yogic practices can enhance eye health. Techniques like Nasikagra Drishti (focusing on the tip of the nose) and Bindu Trataka (gazing steadily at a fixed point) build focus and strengthen ocular muscles. Relaxation postures like Shavasana also help reduce tension around the eyes and forehead.

8/10

Soothe with naturopathy

A little self-care can go a long way in keeping eyes fresh and relaxed. Applying a cool cucumber slice or a soft mud pack over closed eyes helps reduce puffiness and eye fatigue while calming the delicate skin around the eyes.

9/10

Prioritize rest and relaxation

No external care can replace the healing power of quality sleep. Aim for at least six to seven hours of quality rest each night to allow your eyes to recover from daily stress and rejuvenate. Stimulating acupressure points around the eyes also helps relax the eye muscles and relieve tension. For enhanced eye health, Ayurvedic treatments like Netra Tarpana (nourishing the eyes with medicated ghee) and Nasya (nasal oil application) which are provided in established Ayurveda centres, help detoxify and rejuvenate the eyes. Practices like Shirodhara and Virechana further support relaxation, reduce eye strain, and promote overall well-being.

10/10

The takeaway

Your eyes are among your most precious assets, yet they often bear the brunt of our fast-paced lives. By weaving these simple, natural habits into your daily routine, you can protect your vision, ease digital strain, and nurture a deeper sense of balance and well-being. After all, clearer sight isn’t just about what we see, it’s also about how brightly we experience the world around us.
