Why fasting is good for health

Fasting is defined as abstinence from food for a defined period of time. Indians have been doing it for a long time, especially for their religious beliefs. Whatever the reason, fasting has been found to have immense health benefits. Various studies have been conducted to prove the health benefits of quitting food for a short period of time. Even Intermittent fasting has gained popularity in recent times for losing weight. Here are some amazing health benefits of fasting.

2/8

Controls blood sugar level

Fasting can control blood sugar that can be very beneficial for people suffering from diabetes. A study conducted on around 10 people suffering from type 2 diabetes revealed that fasting for a short period of time can actually decrease the blood sugar level. Restricting your food and water intake for a fixed period of time reduces insulin resistance, which allows the transportation of glucose from your blood to the cells in a more effective way.

3/8

Promotes better health

Chronic inflammation is a serious thing and can take a serious toll on a person's health. Inflammation can lead to grave conditions like heart disease, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Few studies have found that fasting can help to decrease inflammation and promote better health.

4/8

Good for heart

Cardiovascular problem is one of the leading causes of death across the globe and fasting can reduce its risk. Research indicates that including fasting in your routine can be beneficial when it comes to heart health. It also decreases blood pressure as well as triglycerides level.

5/8

Helps in weight loss

Many people trying to shed kilos opt for intermittent fast for effective results. Some researches found that short term fasting can increase the overall metabolism and can accelerate your weight loss process. Fasting has found to be more effective than calorie restriction for losing unwanted fat from the body.

6/8

Could delay aging

Fasting can also delay aging and extend longevity. In a study carried out on rats, it was found that when rats were made to fast every other day they lived 83 percent longer than other rats. Though the study has till now only been carried out on animals and its effect has not to be verified on any human.

7/8

Good for gut health

Fasting gives your gut and stomach a relief from the grueling task of digesting the food. It also helps to improve gut flora.

8/8

Bottom line:

It is true that fasting has some amazing health benefits, but it needs to be done with utmost care. First of all, fasting is not for everyone. If you are suffering from diabetes, restricting your food intake can lead to a sudden spike and crash in your blood sugar level, which can be quite dangerous for your health. Before planning to fast, consult your doctor and do not stay hungry for more than 24 hours in one go. Keep yourself hydrated and get plenty of rest when fasting.
