Blood clots aren’t always loud or dramatic. In fact, many develop quietly in the body, until they suddenly cause serious issues like a heart attack, stroke, or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). While some symptoms are widely known, like swelling in the leg or chest pain, others fly under the radar. These subtle, unusual signs are ignored as something very basic, like fatigue or muscle cramps.
But here’s the truth: spotting these symptoms early could make a world of difference. Below are 7 under-recognised symptoms that may indicate a blood clot is forming somewhere inside. A sudden, unexplained cough
A blood clot in the lungs, also known as a
pulmonary embolism (PE), can cause a sudden dry cough. In some cases, the cough may even bring up small traces of blood, though not always. The cough often doesn’t respond to syrup or lozenges because it’s not a throat issue, it’s the lungs asking for attention.
One cold foot or hand when the other feels normal
A clot blocking blood flow in a limb can reduce circulation, making one hand or foot feel unusually cold while the other feels fine. This difference can be subtle but is worth noticing, especially if paired with tingling or slight numbness.
Sudden vision changes in one eye
A clot in the arteries supplying the eye can lead to
blurred or lost vision in one eye. This symptom may only last a few minutes, but even a short episode could indicate a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also called a “mini stroke.”
Painful breathing or sharp shoulder discomfort
A blood clot in the lungs can cause sharp, stabbing pain while breathing deeply. Sometimes, the pain may radiate toward the shoulder or upper back, which misleads people into thinking it’s just muscular. In reality, it's the lungs reacting to reduced oxygen flow.

Red, itchy skin on one leg without rash
A developing clot in a
deep vein can inflame the skin above it, causing redness, itchiness, and a warm feeling, without any visible rash or hives. This often appears in only one leg, not both.
Unexplained jaw pain or pressure
In some cases, a clot related to heart issues, like a heart attack, can present as jaw discomfort. While chest pain is the classic sign, in some people (especially women), the warning signs are much subtler and might include pressure or tightness around the jawline or neck.
Swelling behind the knee or in the groin area
Blood clots can hide in less obvious places like behind the knee or even in the pelvic region. If swelling appears in these areas, particularly on one side, and is accompanied by heaviness or a dull ache, it may be a red flag for DVT.
