6 most common things that can seriously harm male libido and reproductive health

Things that can unknowingly harm male libido

When it comes to male libido and reproductive health, it is a mix of biological, psychological, and environmental factors that makes it all the more complex. While occasional low libido due to poor sleep, stress or anxiety is common and nothing to worry about, certain habits or exposures can unknowingly cause more serious, long-lasting harm to male reproductive health. Since these habits are subtle, their harm often accumulates over time until symptoms like low sex drive, erectile dysfunction (ED), poor sperm quality, or infertility emerge. Here we list some of the most common things that can seriously harm male libido and reproductive health that one should be aware of:

2/7

Poor diet and obesity

Having a poor diet that is high in ultra-processed foods, sugars, unhealthy fats, and low in nutrients can not only cause obesity, but also metabolic disorders and reproductive issues in men.

According to a 2014 study, obesity in men leads to lower total and free testosterone. This also increases aromatase activity in fat tissue that converts testosterone to estrogens, disturbing the hormonal balance and lowering testosterone further.

In the long run, all of this can lower one's libido and damage sperm production and quality.

3/7

Exposure to heat

The testicular temperature has to be a few degrees cooler than the body temperature for proper sperm production in the body. But, when exposed to excessive heat — either by using saunas, hot baths, tight clothing, or keeping the laptops near the groin — it can impair one's sperm quality thus unknowingly affecting their reproductive health.

4/7

Smoking, alcohol, and substance abuse

Smoking Tobacco is strongly linked to reduced and poor semen quality (with fewer sperms being produced, poor motility and morphology), more sperm DNA damage, and reduced libido. Alcohol, when consumed in excess, not only harms the liver but also harms testicular tissue, thus reducing testosterone and affecting erections. Also, certain recreational drugs, including some prescription drugs, when used for a long time can negatively affect one's libido and sperm health.

5/7

Stress, poor sleep and mental health issues

Stress increases cortisol (a stress hormone) in the body which in turn suppresses testosterone production. According to UT News, research from The University of Texas at Austin showed how chronically elevated cortisol blocks testosterone's behavioural effects and can reduce testosterone production, thus causing impotence and loss of libido.

Similarly, poor sleep or sleep disorders (like sleep apnea) also reduce testosterone, increase fatigue, and worsen mood — all of which can reduce one's desire thus affecting their sexual health.

6/7

Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs)

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are chemicals that interfere with the body’s hormonal balance. Examples include bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates (in plastics and many consumer goods), and certain pesticides. When exposed frequently, these chemical can disrupt testosterone production, reduce or degrade sperm quality, influence sperm morphology, reduce sperm motility, and even cause DNA damage in sperm in some cases.
In order to prevent EDS exposure, one should reduce plastic usage, and choose cleaner food sources.

7/7

Medical conditions and hormonal imbalances

While hormonal imbalances are quite common in women, they are also seen in men-- mainly due to underlying health conditions. Some chronic health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity/metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, thyroid disorders, kidney disease are known to affect one's libido and reproductive health. These can damage blood vessels and nerves, reduce hormone production, raise inflammatory markers, or interfere with sexual function more directly.
