5 warning symptoms of Chronic Kidney Disease you should not ignore

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects millions worldwide. It is a long-term condition where the kidneys do not work as well as they are supposed to. Though it is a common condition, many people don’t even know they have it. This is due to the absence of symptoms in the early stages. However, when the disease becomes advanced, the kidneys may stop working altogether. CKD also increases the risk of other health problems like heart disease and stroke. Early detection is critical to slow the progression of CKD and improve outcomes. Here are five warning symptoms of CKD that you should not ignore.

2/9

Tiredness or weakness

Persistent tiredness or weakness is a sign of CKD. The kidneys filter waste and excess fluids from the blood. But when they do not work properly, the toxins build up, leading to fatigue. Feeling unusually drained, even after rest, is a sign. Anemia is often seen in CKD due to reduced red blood cell production.

3/9

Swelling in legs, ankles, or feet

Swelling, or oedema, in the lower extremities is a warning sign of kidney dysfunction. Damaged kidneys struggle to remove excess fluid, which accumulates in tissues. This symptom may worsen throughout the day and can extend to the hands or face.

4/9

Itching

Itching and dry skin are crucial signs of CDK. Severe, persistent itching, particularly on the back, legs, or arms, can stem from CKD. When the kidneys fail, phosphorus and other waste products accumulate in the blood, irritating the skin. This leads to itching, which often gets worse at night and can disrupt sleep. Over-the-counter creams rarely help, and so scratching may lead to infections.

5/9

Shortness of breath

People tend to associate shortness of breath as a respiratory issue, or other lifestyle changes such as being overweight. However, unexplained shortness of breath may indicate CKD-related complications. Fluid buildup in the lungs, caused by poor kidney function, can make breathing difficult. Additionally, anemia reduces oxygen-carrying capacity, worsening breathlessness. Patients may notice trouble breathing during routine activities. This symptom, especially when paired with others like swelling or fatigue, warrants immediate attention.

6/9

Changes in urination patterns

Chronic Kidney Disease disrupts the normal urination pattern. People with CKD often complain of frequent urination, especially at night. Some experience a reduced urge to urinate. A few experience difficulty in urinating. Urine may appear foamy, bloody, or unusually dark. These changes reflect the kidneys’ impaired ability to filter properly. Pain or burning during urination can also occur. Tracking these symptoms and discussing them with a healthcare provider are crucial for early CKD diagnosis.
