5 subtle symptoms of Bladder Cancer that are not noticeable at the beginning

Bladder Cancer is a disease where cancer cells form in the tissues of the bladder. More common in males than females over 55 years of age, the cancer is known to cause blood in urine, which is said to be the first sign (and often the most important one) However, sometimes this is not the case, and there are other symptoms that are less obvious, and can easily be missed in the early stages. Here are five symptoms of bladder cancer that may not be noticeable at first, but should be taken note of immediately if they occur (though they are not exclusive to the condition)

2/8

Frequent urination

One of the earliest signs of bladder cancer can be frequent urination. You might find yourself going to the bathroom more frequently than usual (even though your water consumption has not gone up) or feeling a sudden, strong urge to urinate even when your bladder is not full (you might find it difficult to hold) This symptom can be mistaken for a urinary tract infection or an overactive bladder, so it often goes unnoticed as a warning sign of cancer.

If you notice that these changes last weeks or come with other symptoms, it’s important to get checked out, since this can indicate irritation or growths inside the bladder that need medical attention.

3/8

Pain or Burning During Urination

Pain or a burning sensation when you urinate is another symptom that might be attributed to common infections like UTI. However, bladder cancer can cause inflammation or irritation of the bladder lining, leading to discomfort during urination.
Unlike typical urinary tract infections that usually respond well to antibiotics, bladder cancer-related pain may persist or return repeatedly after a few weeks. If you experience painful urination along with other symptoms like blood in the urine or frequent urination, it’s important to consult a doctor.

4/8

Feeling the need to urinate, but don't do so

Sometimes, bladder cancer can cause a feeling that you need to urinate immediately, even though your bladder is nearly empty. This sensation can be frustrating because it doesn’t go away after using the bathroom. It is often confused with an UTI too, as it causes the same symptom.
This happens because tumors or abnormal growths in the bladder can irritate nerves or reduce bladder capacity, sending false signals to your brain. If this feeling continues or worsens, it should be checked out immediately, as it may indicate bladder abnormalities including cancer.

5/8

Lower back/pelvic pain

Bladder cancer in its early stages may not cause pain, but as the disease progresses, you might feel discomfort or aching in the lower back or pelvic area. This pain is often dull and persistent and may be mistaken for muscle strain or other common conditions.
Pain in these areas can mean that the cancer has grown deeper into the bladder wall or nearby tissues. If you experience unexplained lower back or pelvic pain along with urinary symptoms, it’s important not to ignore these signs.

6/8

Change in urine color

While visible blood in the urine is a well-known symptom, sometimes the urine may look normal, but still contain small amounts of blood that can only be detected by lab tests. This is called microscopic hematuria, and is seen as an "off color" of urine rather than a pink or red color.
Because there is no obvious sign like red or pink urine, microscopic blood in the urine often goes unnoticed unless a urine test is done for other reasons. If you have risk factors such as smoking, exposure to harmful chemicals, or a family history of bladder cancer, regular urine tests can help catch these hidden signs early.
