Increasing risk of lung cancer

Lung cancer incidence has increased significantly in recent years, and the number of cases is still rising. To understand this disease's rapid spread, we must look further into its underlying causes as a result of this alarming trend.

Despite the widespread belief that smoking is the main cause of lung cancer, it is important to identify that some people can develop lung cancer even if they have never smoked. These people may find it complicated to accept a lung cancer diagnosis because the cause is still unknown. Therefore, it is crucial that everyone is informed about the main factors that lead to lung cancer in non-smokers.

Some most prominent and noticeable causes of Lung cancer in non-smokers are:

2/6

Increased Air Pollution

Increased air pollution from cars, power plants, and other industrial facilities is a major factor in the rising rate of lung cancer. Long-term exposure to dirty air increases the risk of acquiring lung cancer, according to medical professionals. The health of people is particularly at risk in areas with high concentrations of PM2.5 particles.

3/6

Radon Gas

Radon, a naturally occurring byproduct of uranium decay, is a chemically inert gas. One of the main causes of lung cancer is believed to be radon gas exposure. Despite the fact that radon gas is almost universally present, those who inhale high levels of radon are more susceptible to lung cancer.

Dr. Vineet Kaul – Associate Consultant - The Oncology Centre, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram says, “Homes that are well insulated, tightly sealed, and constructed on soil rich in the elements uranium, radium, and thorium have higher radon levels than other types of homes. Prolonged exposure to high levels of radon is a leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.”

4/6

Second hand smoking

It is certain that you will inhale cigarette smoke and engage in passive smoking if you spend a lot of time among smokers. In comparison to other nonsmokers, nonsmokers who live with a smoker have a higher risk of developing lung cancer. Up to 7,000 compounds may be present in passive smoking, at least 250 of which are known to be dangerous. The government has prohibited smoking in public places because of this.

5/6

Exposure to cancer-causing chemicals in workplaces

Several companies have toxic environments with toxins that could lead to lung cancer in employees. Some of these carcinogens include asbestos, arsenic, silica, diesel exhaust, pesticides, dust, and fumes. Therefore, it is suggested that smelters, carpenters, and refinery employees minimize their exposure to such dangerous materials in order to prevent lung cancer. Workers in industries such as mining, construction, and manufacturing may be at higher risk.

6/6

Genetic

An additional factor may be linked to a person's gene (DNA). Numerous studies have demonstrated that if a non-smoker has a family history of the disease, lung cancer may also develop in that person. In non-smokers, lung cancer development may be influenced by hereditary factors. An increased risk may exist for people with a family history of lung cancer.

Other factors that contribute to lung cancer include, radiation exposure, and lung conditions include tuberculosis, asthma, emphysema, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Sorry to say this. But the information here is half baked. What are the types of cancers that a human can get due to these causes? How does one get small cell cancer in the lung of a non smoker?
