5 hidden symptoms of kidney failure (and it is not back pain or frequent urination)

Kidney failure is typically associated with only two signs: back pain or excessive urination. However, long-term Kidney failure presents itself through different subtle signs, which people typically do not recognise. It is vital to recognise these concealed warning signs, since early kidney problems usually produce no pain, or noticeable symptoms. Identifying these indicators will enable you to seek medical help sooner, to protect yourself. Here are 5 relatively uncommon symptoms of kidney failure...

2/12

Extreme Tiredness and Feeling Weak

The hormone erythropoietin (EPO) produced by kidneys, helps your body create red blood cells, yet kidney failure decreases this hormone production. The body relies on red blood cells to distribute oxygen to both muscles and the brain. A decrease in red blood cells leads to decreased oxygen levels in the body, which causes excessive fatigue and weakness despite adequate rest.
This fatigue differs from typical tiredness, because it remains severe throughout extended periods. Your energy levels decrease so that everyday activities become more challenging, while daytime sleepiness persists. This symptom reveals anemia, which is quite common in kidney disease.

3/12

Trouble Concentrating or Memory Problems

When someone has kidney failure, the blood is not being filtered properly, and it accumulates waste products and toxins. Toxic substances in the blood interfere with brain operations, which result in poor concentration and unclear memory. The brain functions become impaired to the point that people lose their ability to recall everyday tasks while their conversations become disorganised, and unclear.
In such a case, brain fog exists beyond the typical effects of fatigue. Your brain suffers from insufficient oxygenation because of anemia and waste substances that harm your nervous system. People who experience kidney failure commonly report they cannot concentrate their thoughts, nor remember information properly.

4/12

Persistent Itching (Without Rash)

Itchy skin represents a peculiar yet frequent manifestation, which occurs when the kidneys fail. People with this condition experience skin itching, without any rash or visible reaction. The improper waste removal by kidneys allows toxins to accumulate in your body, leading to skin irritation that feels intense beneath the skin surface.
The symptom causes uncomfortable sensations that disrupt your ability to sleep properly. The skin condition which results from kidney damage creates an itching sensation that requires medical intervention, since it differs from typical allergic reactions.

5/12

Swelling in Hands, Feet, or Around the Eyes

When your kidneys work normally, it enables your body to eliminate surplus salt along with water. The kidneys' inability to process waste, results in fluid accumulation which primarily affects the lower body regions and surrounding areas. This swelling, known as edema, produces tightness in shoes while creating facial and finger puffiness that makes rings feel tight.
The swelling appears without any reason, and will worsen as time progresses. This appears as a result of kidney failure, which prevents your body from maintaining fluid balance (water retention), thus leading to noticeable swelling in various body parts.

6/12

Changes in Appetite and Taste

The buildup of waste in your bloodstream from kidney failure disrupts your sense of taste. Food typically tastes salty, bitter or metallic to people experiencing this condition. Your appetite decreases, because of this change while food avoidance becomes more likely. Your loss of appetite because of weight loss, leads to progressive weakness throughout time.
Kidney failure patients experience decreased appetite, because toxins disrupt their digestive system and send brain signals. The early detection of this sign matters, because proper nutrition helps your body recover from illness sooner.

7/12

Take care of your health

Taking care of your overall health will protect your kidneys too

8/12

Consult a doctor

If you notice these signs, consult a doctor right away.

9/12

Diet

Maintaining kidney health is crucial, and so incorporating the right foods into your diet matters. Foods like cauliflower, cabbage, and red bell peppers are excellent choices as they are low in potassium and high in vitamins and antioxidants. Blueberries and grapes offer powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, helping to reduce oxidative stress on the kidneys.

10/12

Healthy body, healthy you

A healthy body and mind is extremely important for overall health

11/12

Stay hydrated

Water helps kidneys flush out toxins. Aim for 8–10 glasses a day unless advised otherwise by a doctor.

12/12

Why is it important to keep our kidneys healthy?

Keeping our kidneys healthy is paramount because these bean-shaped organs perform several life-sustaining functions essential for overall well-being. They act as sophisticated filters, removing waste products and excess fluid from the blood to produce urine, which prevents the build-up of harmful toxins in the body. Beyond waste elimination, kidneys regulate blood pressure, produce hormones vital for red blood cell production (erythropoietin), and maintain the balance of electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium, which are crucial for nerve and muscle function.
