5 common reasons why blood sugar fluctuates

Let's know the normal blood sugar level

A change in blood sugar level leads to a condition called diabetes, of which close to 80 million Indians are suffering from. So when is your blood sugar high enough to cause diabetes? Fasting blood sugar more than 125 mg/dL is considered to be diabetic and blood sugar between 100 to 125 mg/dL is considered to be prediabetes. Fasting blood sugar is the gold standard test for diabetes because the body is devoid of any sugar before the test. Not fasting before the test might spike your glucose level and not give an accurate measurement of your blood sugar.

In this article, we will discuss why blood sugar fluctuates in many people despite attempts made to keep it under control.

2/6

You are probably dehydrated

When you are dehydrated the water content in your body is less which makes the blood sugar content more concentrated and hence this explains the spike in the blood glucose level.

3/6

You are probably not taking the right dose of medicine

Another reason why your blood glucose level is changing because the medication that you were prescribed is not working for your body and needs to be changed. Many people do not check their blood glucose regularly and continue with the same old dosage for years.

4/6

You are probably taking other medicines

If you are on other medications, for example steroids, it is likely to interfere with your diabetes medication. This means, even when you are taking the medicine it is not working for you and hence your blood sugar is not getting controlled.

5/6

You are probably stressed

Stress is a silent killer and only few years before we have started understanding this fact. "Physical or emotional stress triggers the release of hormones that can cause high blood sugar levels," says MayoClinic.

6/6

You are probably sleeping less

Sleep is not just the body relaxing, it is in fact an important biological process in which the body is engaged in several important functions one of which is regulating the insulin. The US CDC says, even just one night of too little sleep can make your body use insulin less well.'
