PCOS and its impact

Few, odd, or unusually long periods are symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome. It frequently leads to having too much androgen, a masculine hormone. On the ovaries, several little fluid-filled sacs form. They might not consistently release eggs. Missed or irregular periods, excessive hair growth, acne, infertility, and weight gain are all symptoms of PCOS.

2/6

Symptoms of PCOS

PCOS is a disease of excess. There is an excess of circulating hormones like oestrogen and androgens, there is excessive weight gain, excessive pigmentation of the skin of the neck armpits and skin folds, excessive hair and acne, and increase in cholesterol and triglycerides. Longstanding PCOS can result in hormonal dysfunction with absence of periods or amenorrhoea over several months, infertility due to anovulation, thickening of the endometrium with a tendency to bleed whenever the period ensues and a condition called cystic glandular hyperplasia of the endometrium, heart disease and morbid obesity. Over the years, the presence of hair and acne may be emotionally disturbing leading to poor self image and depression.

3/6

Diabetes and PCOS

PCOS is a condition in which there is insulin resistance. This can cause diabetes in the long run. Increase in a hormone called Leptin in women with PCOS can also contribute to Diabetes

4/6

Hypertension and PCOS

Women with PCOS tend to have high cholesterol and triglycerides. Also they have some hormones and growth factors circulating in the body which raises the blood pressure. Alos they have a higher tendency to develop atherosclerosis leading to high blood pressure.

5/6

Endometrial cancer and PCOS

It doesn’t take too long for endometrial cancer to settle when pcos is left untreated. It is difficult to estimate the interval between diagnosing PCOS and developing Endometrial cancer. Suffice to say that women with PCOS tend to develop cystic glandular hyperplasia which is a gateway to developing Endometrial Cancer.

The takeaway:

Maintaining a healthy weight is important to reverse the PCOS symptoms. Insulin and testosterone levels can drop with weight loss. Moreover, it might make ovulation happen again. Cutting back on the carbs can help too. Diets high in carbohydrates may raise insulin levels. Take action. Blood sugar levels are lowered by exercise.
