Ever heard of ATTR-CM or STEMI?

Heart is prone to several complications and we only know the common ones. There are several cardiovascular complications which we do not know about and there is a need to know about these because having a preliminary idea about these can help you in getting medical treatment at the earliest.

2/11

Kawasaki disease

Another rare heart disease, the Kawasaki disease, happens due to inflammation of the coronary arteries. It is mostly seen in children and the typical symptoms of this disease are high fever, swollen hands, red eyes and peeling skin. It is also called mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome because in this disease the lymph nodes swell.

3/11

ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)

This is another type of heart disease which is not seen commonly and the cases are only found in women. In STEMI, a major coronary artery gets blocked completely. It is also said to be one of the most serious types of heart attack. A recent study, the findings of which were presented at the British Cardiovascular Society Conference, has found that the risk of STEMI increases the most on Mondays.

4/11

Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM)

This is a rare form of heart disease in which irregular proteins build up in the heart. This protein build up stiffens the left ventricle of the heart and impairs its pumping ability, which is in fact the main role of the heart. Growth of these proteins makes it difficult for the heart to pump the blood properly. It is also known as cardiac amyloidosis, amyloidosis ATTR, etc.

5/11

Cardiac syndrome X

Considered to be a rare heart disease, Cardiac syndrome X does not show any coronary vascular abnormalities on angiograms. This is characterized by anginal pain. It is mostly seen in perimenopausal and postmenopausal females.

6/11

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy

You would be surprised to know that Takotsubo cardiomyopathy occurs in response to an intense emotional experience. Even high intense physical experience can also trigger this heart condition. In this the heart's pumping chamber changes space and this affects its ability to pump blood.

7/11

Prinzmetal angina

It is also known as variant angina. This is caused by a spasm in the coronary arteries. It can happen due to cold weather, stress, medicines which narrow the blood vessels, smoking and cocaine. This pain is typically felt in the night or early morning.

8/11

Torsades de pointes

Coined by Dessertenne in 1966, Torsades de pointes refers to a polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. One of the classic symptoms of this disease is atypical heart rhythm and in this the lower chambers of the heart beat faster than the upper chambers. It can lead to sudden cardiac death.

9/11

Tetralogy of Fallot

This is a congenital heart condition in which a baby is born with a narrow pulmonary valve, an aorta placed on the right side of the body, a hole between two ventricles, and thick muscles on the right side of the heart. Babies born with this defect have a heart surgery done early.

10/11

Barlow's syndrome

In simple terms, Barlow's syndrome means the mitral valves, which separates the upper chambers from the lower chambers of the heart do not close properly as a result of which there is a typical murmur sound which can be heard with a stethoscope.

11/11

Ebstein’s anomaly

A defect in the tricuspid valve of the heart leads to a condition called Ebstein’s anomaly. The tricuspid valve separates the right atrium from the right ventricle. The tricuspid valve is formed in the first eight weeks of the fetal growth. The common symptoms are arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death.
