India faces a multitude of health challenges

India faces numerous health challenges and diseases, stemming from factors such as population density, poverty, inadequate sanitation, and limited access to healthcare. Infectious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, and diarrheal illnesses remain prevalent, alongside non-communicable diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and respiratory disorders. Here are 10 leading causes of death in India.

2/11

Ischemic Heart Disease

Ischemic heart disease stands as the leading cause of death in India, reflecting the significant burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) nationwide. Factors such as urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and rising stress levels contribute to the high prevalence of IHD. IHD symptoms typically include chest pain or discomfort (angina), which may feel like pressure, squeezing, or fullness in the chest. Other common symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, and pain or discomfort in the neck, jaw, throat, back, or arms. Symptoms may vary in intensity and duration.

3/11

Stroke

Stroke is another leading cause of death in India. Both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes contribute to this alarming statistic, emphasizing the need for comprehensive stroke prevention and management programs. Stroke symptoms vary but often include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body, sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or coordination, and a severe headache with no known cause.

4/11

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD remains a significant public health challenge in India, primarily due to the high prevalence of smoking, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and biomass fuel use for cooking. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) presents with symptoms such as persistent cough, often with sputum production, shortness of breath, especially during physical activity, wheezing, chest tightness, and frequent respiratory infections. As COPD progresses, symptoms may worsen, leading to fatigue, weight loss, and limited ability to perform daily activities.

5/11

Lower respiratory infections

Lower respiratory infections, including pneumonia and bronchitis, constitute a major cause of death, particularly among children under five years old and elderly individuals. Factors such as inadequate vaccination coverage, indoor air pollution, overcrowded living conditions, and malnutrition contribute to the burden of LRIs.

6/11

Diarrheal diseases

Despite significant progress in reducing diarrheal diseases, they remain a leading cause of death, particularly among children in India. Poor sanitation, inadequate access to safe drinking water, improper food hygiene practices, and limited healthcare infrastructure contribute to diarrheal morbidity and mortality.

7/11

Tuberculosis (TB)

India continues to grapple with a high burden of tuberculosis, fueled by factors such as poverty, overcrowding, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, and drug resistance. Tuberculosis (TB) manifests with various symptoms, including persistent cough, often with sputum or blood, chest pain, fatigue, weight loss, fever, and night sweats. As the disease progresses, symptoms may worsen, leading to difficulty breathing and prolonged illness. Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent complications and transmission of TB to others.

8/11

Diabetes Mellitus

The rising prevalence of diabetes mellitus poses a significant health threat in India, driven by urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and genetic predisposition. Diabetes presents with symptoms such as increased thirst and hunger, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow wound healing. In type 1 diabetes, symptoms may develop rapidly, while type 2 diabetes symptoms may be gradual. Early detection through blood tests is crucial to manage diabetes and prevent complications.

9/11

Neonatal disorders

Neonatal disorders, including preterm birth complications, birth asphyxia, and neonatal sepsis, contribute substantially to infant mortality rates in India.

10/11

Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease is emerging as a significant public health concern in India, fueled by rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and inadequate access to healthcare services. It often progresses silently, with symptoms manifesting in later stages. Common symptoms include fatigue, weakness, swelling in the ankles and legs (edema), difficulty concentrating, decreased appetite, and persistent itching. As CKD advances, symptoms may worsen, leading to high blood pressure, electrolyte imbalances, and fluid retention.

11/11

Liver diseases

Liver diseases, including viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, contribute to a substantial number of deaths in India. Factors such as alcohol consumption, viral hepatitis infections, obesity, and metabolic syndrome drive the rising prevalence of liver diseases.
