From Tulsi to Mulethi: 4 powerful herbs that can purify lungs and how to use them

Our lungs are subjected to continuous exposure to toxins in the air, impurities, smoke and respiratory infections. All these factors, over time, damage the lung function, decrease oxygen absorption and ultimately result in respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD and bronchitis. Today's medicines and antibiotics have numerous cures but nature also has very effective helpers in the shape of herbs that can be used to clean the lungs and increase the lung capacity. Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine use these herbs as natural anti-inflammatories if taken cautiously.

2/5

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

One of the most popular and well-studied herbs for bronchial support, it is also called 'Yashtimadhu' in Ayurveda. It has a positive action that implies that it forms a protective, soothing lung coating on mucous membranes. Especially helpful in dry cough, sore throat and bronchitis. Licorice has potent anti-inflammatory action which reduces swelling and is beneficial for people who are afflicted with allergic asthma, chronic bronchitis etc.

3/5

Ginger

Ginger and its powerful anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial functions make ginger an important herb in lung well-being. A study published in the National Library of Medicine substantiates the fact that ginger is effective in mitigating lung damage and protects the lungs from severe damage by inflammation. Incorporating ginger into our diet, fresh cut or as tea or in herbal supplements, can facilitate cleansing of the lungs and enhance respiratory processes.

4/5

Tulsi (Holy basil)

Commonly known as "Queen of herbs", Tulsi is not only sacred but also a potent natural solution to numerous health problems, particularly those of the lung and respiratory system.
Tulsi has natural bioactive compounds like eugenol that exert anti-inflammatory action. It relaxes bronchial airway tubes and decreases airway inflammation. Particularly useful for asthma, allergic rhinitis. Most of the time in Indian homes, if we get ill, Tulsi is our rescuer, consumed in the form of tea or applied in the form of steam inhalation. Tulsi strengthens immune reactions in the lung which becomes more resistant to infection and pollution-induced stress.

5/5

Mullein (Verbascum Thapsus)

A native to Europe, North Africa and Asia, Mullein has become very popular for its calming and cooling action on the lung and is now one of the most popular detox and respiratory wellness herbs. Anti-inflammatory properties of Mullein soothe the inflamed airways, facilitating smooth airflow, especially useful in sinus, allergic inflammation etc. Mullein may be ingested in a variety of ways; it may be taken in the form of teas or even added to hot water and the steam may be inhaled.
