From stronger bones to smoother skin: Top Gastroenterologist reveals some unknown benefits of these fruits and plants...

Most of us know that most fruits, and natural foods are good for health (thinks carrots for eyes, walnuts for brain etc). However, do you know that certain foods have unknown benefits that we might not be aware of as well? Dr. Pal Manickam, a leading Gastroenterologist, based in US, shares some unknown benefits of these fruits and plants. Including these in your everyday diet can lead to a host of health benefits, when combined with an overall healthy diet and exercise...

2/7

Pomegranate for heart health

Pomegranate juice gained popularity because of its deep red color, and high concentration of powerful antioxidants, known as polyphenols. Studies with human participants demonstrate that drinking pomegranate juice regularly leads to decreased "bad" cholesterol levels, blood pressure reduction, and slower artery plaque formation, which causes heart attacks and strokes. The participants who consumed pomegranate juice throughout one year, experienced continuous artery thickening reduction and improved blood circulation, during the 12-month study period, compared to the non-pomegranate juice group.

3/7

Amla for skin health

Amla or Indian gooseberry, can help in getting a clearer skin. The skin benefits from vitamin C and antioxidants, which protect it against environmental pollutants and sunlight exposure. Research conducted in laboratories demonstrated that amla extract stimulates skin cells to generate additional collagen, which maintains skin elasticity and firmness. The antioxidants in amla protect skin from damage, while maintaining skin moisture levels for extended periods. The observed changes in skin structure might help people delay wrinkle development, while maintaining their skin texture.

4/7

Papaya for smoother digestion

Papaya stands out because it contains special enzymes and fiber which help with food breakdown. The proteolytic enzyme papain in papaya, helps with protein digestion, and shows potential to alleviate heartburn and bloating symptoms. The digestive properties of papaya exist in both its ripe and unripe states, but the ripe version produces short-chain fatty acids, which maintain gut health. People who consume papaya experience improved digestion, and reduced symptoms of constipation. The main digestive advantages of papaya stem from its natural enzymes, and its ability to enhance gut bacteria function.

5/7

Banana for energy

Athletes frequently select bananas as their preferred snack, because of their delicious taste. The body quickly converts the high carbohydrate content in bananas into energy, which makes them an ideal choice for athletes. A single medium banana contains 27 grams of carbohydrates, together with natural sugars, which provide instant energy without causing blood sugar fluctuations. The body uses vitamin B6 and C found in bananas, to convert food into usable energy. Many athletes select bananas as their preferred workout snack, because they provide immediate energy without any sugar or caffeine content. The high potassium content in bananas also makes them a popular remedy for muscle cramps. The electrolyte potassium functions as a muscle contraction, and relaxation agent.

6/7

Guava for blood sugar

The natural compounds and fiber content in guava, work together to slow down the body's sugar absorption process. Research indicates that guava extracts and guava leaf extracts, help decrease blood sugar levels and insulin resistance, primarily in people who have pre-diabetic conditions. The subjects who participated in these studies, experienced reduced blood sugar levels after their meals, and their bodies became more responsive to insulin when they consumed guava regularly. The researchers attribute the blood sugar regulation effects to the combination of dietary fiber, and plant-based polyphenols found in guava. A single guava provides more than enough vitamin C to meet your daily needs. The immune system benefits from vitamin C, because it enhances the performance of immune cells that fight infections. The antioxidants in guava work to support immune function through their ability to reduce inflammation. The combination of blood sugar management and high vitamin C content, makes guava an excellent choice for maintaining health during cold and flu season.

7/7

Moringa for stronger bones

Moringa leaves contain calcium, phosphorus and magnesium minerals, which make them suitable for bone health maintenance. Research conducted on animals and in laboratory settings, demonstrates that moringa extract enhances bone density, while repairing bone structures in patients who experience osteoporosis-related bone loss. Research indicates that moringa stimulates bone development, while simultaneously decreasing bone deterioration and enabling bone tissue recovery, after injuries. The compounds in moringa trigger specific bone health-related genes and proteins, which enhance osteoblast function. Research conducted on animals and in laboratories, demonstrates bone health benefits from moringa consumption, although human studies now support its potential use for people who need stronger bones.
