Healthy body, healthy hair!

Many people opt for a consistent workout regime to lose weight, build strength or reduce stress. You might not have heard of anyone exercising to get strong and shiny hair. Still, since exercise benefits your overall health, it is also great for your hair. Time to roll out the yoga mat if you are worried about hair loss. Here is how exercise can help.

2/6

Increased blood circulation

Exercise increases blood circulation in your body as well as oxygen supply to the blood cells. This benefits your hair follicles. For the unversed, a hair follicle is a tube-like structure (pore) that surrounds the root and strand of a hair. It is the opening on the surface of the skin through which hair grows. Healthy hair follicles allow your hair’s growth phase to be longer. This will give your hair more time to grow.

3/6

Reduced stress

Almost any form of exercise can act as a stress reliever. Working out can boost your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries. Stress is a contributing factor to hair loss and thinning. So when exercising helps drive away your stress, it also protects your hair from loss and thinning caused by stress.

Which workout is best for hair?

According to health experts, not all types of exercise are equally beneficial when it comes to benefitting hair growth. Aerobic or cardio exercise may be more beneficial than strength training geared towards hypertrophy. Hypertrophy training builds muscle by increasing the diameter of your muscle fibers. This type of muscle growth is directly linked to testosterone. Having high levels of testosterone may shrink your hair follicles and shortens the cycle of hair growth, as per health experts.

5/6

Exercises to avoid if your aim is hair growth

If you are working out for your hair health, it is best to avoid multi-joint exercises that engage larger muscle groups and increase testosterone most, such as squats, deadlifts, and lunges.

Eating right is also important

Apart from working out, it is also important to get plenty of nutrition for hair growth through your diet. Health experts have found that athletes who fail to meet their nutritional needs for training may experience hair loss due to a lack of iron, vitamins, and other minerals in their body. For healthy hair, it is also important to get enough sleep and quit smoking.
